Denon AVR-e300

I am currently running the Denon AVR e-300 receiver with the audyssey automatic set-up. I have two questions:

1. I am getting a lot of white noise/static sound out of my surrounds (Dayton B652s)
2. I am having to turn the AVR to almost 80 (out of 100 - 80%) volume level just to get to a reasonable listening level - left and right speakers are the Andrew Jones Pioneer towers.

I have checked and double check each wire connection several times. Is this normal?

Also, this is in my bedroom, basically a 12x12 with a small open (no door) closet.

    Sources are?

Also, volume is NOT linear, so 80 is not 80 percent. And Jones speakers are not that Efficient so 80 might be correct. The 300 is an entry level AVR, after all!

You have to explain sources. New to this. But I my ps3 connected to my receiver and watch movies games and Netflix.

When setting up audyssey eq, test sounds are sent to each speaker, measuring distance. So I'm wondering if because my listening position is close, audyssey is setting the db level low. I don't know enough to set speakers up manually and do prefer audyssey to do it for me. I know crossover levels and things like that, but I'm sure there is more of a breakdown.

Also which 5.1 or 5.2 would you suggest? I prefer denon, but would be just as happy with marantz or Yamaha. Trying to stay away from onkyo because of hdmi board issues and Sony for lower end sound reproduction. Unfamiliar with Pioneer avrs or others
  • I did a manual set up and reset speaker levels and now comfortably running the displayed volume at 55-65. So I'm assuming the decibel level was tuned down. I don't think there is a real difference but for some reason I feel better seeing the volume level at 55 instead of 80. The speakers seem more life like. I set cross overs at 80hz and sub level to- 5dB

Auto calibrations tend to do what you described but I would not be worried about the numbers. I calibrated my Onkyo with an SPL meter and it increased the volume number by 10 but the real volume at that new setting was the same.

Source is what you use to play music, etc., like a PS3.

  • Okay. I ran audyssey setup and noted the calibrations. Ran the general same setup manually, but instead set the speaker levels to 0. Audyssey had them general about -3 through -5 depended on feet away. Listening position is slightly left of center (home of avr, tv etc.) but that seemed to increase the volume, allowing me to keep the screen volume at a lower number so mentally makes me happier even though in reality there isn't much difference.

I do appreciate the feedback and am quite satisfied with my entry level equipment. Hoping upgrade hdmi cables and wires with monoprice, and grab a solid center channel
