Hey how can you tell if your amp has a blown channel? My right channel sounds all distored. Kinda like if a driver was blown in a speaker.. that's the sound i'm getting from the right channel of my amp.

What do you think is wrong with it? the million dollar question. how much do you think it'll cost to fix it? it's a Yamaha integrated amp.. about 20+ years old.

thanks guys

Switch the speaker connections on the back of the amp and see if it swaps over to the other side. If it does, swap the speaker cables themselves to make sure it's not them. You want to eliminate everything in steps until you get down to the actual component. If it is the amp, open it up and look for any obvious signs of damage. You don't usually see much as far as something bad. Sometimes if you take a good sniff you can find out what burned up. I would venture a guess that you will end up paying more than it's worth to have something repaired if it has to be taken in. Most places charge $50-75 just to look at it. Now that Ebay's around there are just too many good deals to not consider replacing it. Good luck.

i did switch the speaker connections.. and everything i plug into the right channel is distorted. i changed speaker wires...

I did buy it used on ebay.. as is. so i might take it in and have it checked out.. i guess if there is any possibility that it might only cost 50 to 70 bucks to get it fixed. that wouldn't be to bad.. but if it goes over so.. $100. then that's a whole other thing.

    One last troubleshooting thought:
Is the distotion there for all sources?

As for repair, I'd say that if you cannot spot an issue if you pop the cover off, e.g., fried component on a circuit board. loose wire, etc., the odds are low that you'll stay under $70.

Most bench rates from reputable repair services are at least $50.

Yes the distortion problem is there for all sources. I will open it up Sunday and take a look under the hood. For me to find any problem it would have to be pretty obvious... as i'm not savy when it comes to circuit boards and things like that. At first I thought it was the monitor 7's i just got. But that's not the case.. the Monitor 7's sound great, just not the right channel coming from the amp.

Update: Just spoke to a local Yamaha repair shop. they will charge me $20 to dianoigse the problem. repairs and labor will be extra of course. I think for $20, it would be worth it. Really how expensive can replacing bad parts be in a used amp?

i called the repair shop today to find out how repairs were going on my vintage Yamaha integrated amp.

they said.. they replaced one resistor. and had to order a second one.. repair costs should be under $70 total. not to bad.. can't wait to get it back home.

very happy. I picked up my Yammie amp today.. total cost of repairs. $32.31 not bad huh?

I'd say if anyone has any vintage gear they need repaired. i'd check into getting it fixed. It may be less expensive than you think. That was the case for me anyways.

Amp sounds good hooked up the Monitor 7's. those babies have some nice bass going on. I'm impressed as hell.

Russ, the tuna i'm using now is a POS Sansui digital tuner.

I'm low on funds at the moment. till the tax returns shows up :D

but i'd like to have a silver faceplate vintage tuna to match the Yammie amp. if not a Yammie tuna.. then a Pioneer or something in that range. but must be silver faceplate. I guess the analog Sansui's are all black that i have found. Not many of them come up on Ebay very often.

i'm still under my $500 budget.

    amp $130 + $32.31 to repair
    Monitor 7's $100
    POS Sansui $19
    grand total______
$281.31 *(does not take into account shipping costs)

I was asking because I picked up a minty CT-610 Mark II yesterday from my scrounger.

I need to get some new bulbs in it, then I can get back to you on it if you want.

    Cheers,
    Russ
