Monitor 70 AM7025-B's versus RTI A9's

Appreciate any comments.
Late to the audio party I bought my Monitors in Jan 2012, still enjoying the massive upgrade from the Sony rack system speakers I had been using for too long. Question, how much of an improvement would the RTI's be? Currently running Yamaha RX V671(90wpc) about to upgrade to Yamaha RX A3020(150wpc). I am a big listen to my music CD's in stereo guy.
Blu-ray movies need to sound good, I have a Polk CS20 & 2 x little Polk TL2's in the back w/BIC America F12 Sub. Comments appreciated.

  • It would be a big difference. The Monitors and RTIs sound very different. The RtiA9 will require separate amplification, even if you get that nice Yamaha, to sound their best. Most here will recommend 200wpc or better external amplifier, such as a Parasound or B&K. I personally think you can get by with less but it still needs to be from an external amp. AVR's just don't make enough to power/current to control the load of the RtiA9/Rti12. The Monitor70's on the other hand may sound better than the Rti powered by an AVR. Both speakers will improve with ext. amplification, however. I have had both Monitor70's and currently the Rti12's and the Rti's have greater potential by far, but you will not realize it with the Yamaha A3020 especially in a surround setup where less power is available.

JM, Thank you for useful info. Question There are still RTi12's for sale at same price as the RTI A9's, would you buy newer or are the 12's better? Note the max wattage on the 12's is higher.
I noticed the A3020 manual states to buy Power Amp with "Unbalanced inputs, with Volume Control by-pass(or without vol control circuit) & with output power about 100W" This is out of my knowledge realm, is this info stated on the amp specs, is it valid iyo? Thank you.

You can get Rti12's directly from Polk via their ebay store. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Audio-RTi12-CHERRY-Floorstanding-Loudspeakers-NEW-PAIR-/231177530934?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item35d3412e36 typically $800 a pair shipped, sometimes they are in sale for $675 with shipping included as well. They are older than the A9's but very similar, the A9's offer a cosmetic upgrade, and perhaps a slight difference in sound due to the differences in the cabinets, but the drivers are the same as well as crossover points. The Rti12's are a bit larger and heavier, however. Unbalanced inputs means rca inputs and not xlr. Power amp's typically do not have vol. controls but some may have adjustable gain to keep the left and right channels balanced. There are many brands to choose from, most here will tell you to steer clear of emotiva though, as they tend to not to sound as good with the Rti's/A's as some others such as parasound, b&k, outlaw etc.

Thank you, appreciate the info. My 3020 arrived today, interested if I notice any difference w/the Monitors.
  • No doubt you will, the Yamaha Aventage line is very good. Enjoy!

Looking forward to Airplay & more power. Bought off Crutchfield as Scratch & dent although I cannot find any scratches or dents. Thanks for the help.
