New Router

Recently upgraded my internet bandwidth with Comcast, and needed to upgrade my router.

I asked the tech guys at work, and they recommended this one:

http://www.linksys.com/en-apac/products/routers/WRT1900AC

It works great and was easy to setup and has great range.

A little pricey but well worth it.

My New Year's resolution is 3840 × 2160

I used all wired to my PCs, HTPCs, and media servers. To that I connect a single 'enterprise class' wireless Access Point.

So, one Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite, a few inexpensive Negear wired unmanged switches and a Ubiqui UniFi Access Point. Capable of Gigabit wire speed through the Wired Router to Comcast (their 105Mbps won't even come close to maxing it out) and the WAP is 300Mbps N-Class with enough power to cover my 4800 sq ft home with a single unit.

AC class wireless routers are really only beneficial if you have AC class wireless devices. Most Smartphones don't have that yet, Tablets don't have that yet, most laptops don't have that.

All the gear I mentioned above was less than the cost of a WRT1900AC.

Wish I could let you test drive the Asus bro, you'd want to own one afterward. Very fast router with plenty of processing power/memory.

Asus RTN66U is also what I am using. I like having the guest account also. I had a Dlink and a belkin before this one. The Asus was much faster.

My History for home use, Comcast, 2 teen daughters on WIFI streaming to the phone while watching netflix streaming into the living room, Amazon Fire tv up stairs. 2 Adult phones also on the wifi. Both TV's streaming HD without an issue!

Got the 1900 myself and hope to install soon.
Did the old router info still show on your PC after you installed this?
I had that problem with a previous upgrade a couple years ago.Even though i put a new router into the system, and thought the old info was cleared out,it still shows.

So the old router cleared, but after default setup, I renamed the new router the same as the old router and changed the password to the old password on the new router... that way I didn't have to re setup all the old wireless devices... It is a great router and the setup utility rocks.

I am looking to possibly get a nice new router myself. For now though I am holding off, but I have the other 2 pieces in place if I ever want to use the 5 GHz range.

My Uverse router is Wireless N, and my office PC has a wireless N dual band card. I then have a 8 port gigabit netgear switch downstairs which is connected to a Asus dual band Wireless Access point.

So far no real issues using my Xbox 360 which we use for Netflix, Hulu & Xbox live. Otherwise my Uverse receiver down here is wireless and has its own base station upstairs.

The 1900 is one of two options for me. The other being the Asus RT-AC68U which Ryan bought and loves.

  • I'll concur on the ASUS routers. I have the RT-N66U and love it. I've had Linksys in the past, and although they have been good to me, the ASUS is just so much better. I've had that router for a couple of years now with not one issue, no need to reboot and a very friendly interface compared to other routers I've used. Worth the extra money in my opinion.

This new Linksys is made by Belkin FYI. Anywho I've done away with most consumer networking. At the head end I have the standard DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem (best I can get here) with 100/20 service. That's feeding my Palo Alto Networks PA-3020 firewall. LAN is handled by a Dell PowerConnect 5524 GigE switch. Wireless is an enterprise class Ruckus ZoneFlex R700 AC unit via POE. I have yet to see a wireless unit come close to this in density and speed. It wipes the floor with Aruba and Cisco. I have all the wireless networks on separate VLANs so they don't mix and multiple SSIDs (AP supports 18) for specific devices such as phones, home automation, data, etc. The new consumer models are pretty good and for the most part do everything a person needs. I work with this stuff every day so like audio here, I went insane overkill :)

Woah! I guess you did go insane with that! I thought my Ubiquiti setup was slightly overkill, but I guess not really. I agree that most consumer devices offer enough for most people, but if you really want stability and speed, enterprise class equipment is where its at.

Yup when they were Cisco/Linksys the specs went to poo, and this new redesigned Belkin/Linksys has like 4X the memory and cache... I had an older Cisco Linksys and it was absolut garbage... This thing is great.

Yeah the Palo Alto unit is what we install at head ends for universities. I just swapped out my SonicWALL TZ105 to support > 100 meg connections.

Geez, I'm more a rookie than I thought. I have the current gen Apple Time Capsule and a couple gigabit switches and my setup works great for us. I know I'm limited on advanced features but my current setup has everything I need.

I'd say my needs are more than most people, as the ability to stream a 40GB mkv file across the network with no buffering is my benchmark, but I'm clearly not in the same league as some of you guys.

If it works for you, that's all you need. I made sure of that today when I was at a client. $10k Ruckus wireless setup with 10 R700 APs ($1200 each), and controller ZD3025 ($8000). I figured in the end it was overkill and got them set up with 10 separate SonicWALLs with wireless. Apple's products have some of the highest density capacity of any consumer products. They were the only one left in the running when an official density test was done between Meraki, Cisco, Ruckus, and Aruba. I have their last generation Airport Extreme and it's very fast. I currently use it as an AP for the garage area. Generally for streaming I wire everything in, but I have the capacity to stream wireless if need be!

We got some awesome deals going on right now too. I really want my own ZoneDirector + 3 APs for my house. Smaller less powerful APs but more locations for increased capacity. The ZoneDirector pushes clients between APs actively so you never lose signal.
