In wall installation question

Hello All,

Quick question. I am installing a pair of LC65is (surrounds in the main room) and a pair of RC60is (in the kitchen).

My question is - do I need to box in the area behind these speakers or should I simply leave insulation lying flush against the back of these units ?

Any problems with the components on the backs of these speakers being in contact with the wall insulation - either the paper or fiberglass side...

Thanks

James

When I installed my RC60i's I did not box in. I was under the impression that they used the wall area and the insulation would reduce standing waves. I have had no problems at all. They have a very nice clean sound, but limited bass. I hope this helps, I'm sure that if you called Polk CS they could elaborate.

Mine are not boxed. No complaints. Would they sound better boxed? Maybe.

I've gone both ways, with insulation and without. I prefer the sound with insulation behind the speaker. I put the insulation side to the speaker. The paper is flamable, the insulation is not.

    You could try these:

It is a fairly low cost investment.

Everybody is going to have a different perception of how well they sound. In-walls can sound really good. Different construction factors will influence it the most. I love the idea of in-walls, and will probably do it somewhere in the house, at some point.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
