While looking at multiple amplifiers from Bryston, Carver ,Parasound, B&K and my own Adcom I noticed many are rack faced models. Now Besides my amp the only other device that is rack mountable is my Samson surge protector. Just wondering why so many companies made this feature if not all other sources are mountable except maybe some Carver pre/amps off the top of my head. The bigger Mcintosh like the 2300 and 2500 and even both the the 400 and 700 Phase Linears had the feature but they were used in studio recording applications. It did not dissuade me from getting it since it does have minor feet which can be raised higher by F-I's hockey puck idea I saw ages ago. I'd like to know if the r/f model would be a no sale just for that reason even if the price was right. BYW I did try to make an angle iron rack to the standard 19'' and was a complete failure. Happy to say no pix of that monstosity exsists.

For home hifi, the rackmount style is generally just that -- style -- a pretentious nod to pro hardware, mounted in 19" racks.
Rack mounting components is fine; as long as the component is less than 19" wide, most could be adapted to be mounted in an equipment rack.

I have some stuff mounted in racks, and -- given a cost-effective source of racks -- it's not a bad way to configure a hifi.

Two of the rack mount 'shelves' may be seen above the TASCAM 22-4 deck in this photo. In this case, the 'rack' is a rather flimsy late-1970s Pioneer rack rather than a more robust commercial/pro equipment rack.

BTW, 19" equipment racks can often be found inexpensively at "surplus stores" such as ESS in Manchester, NH. http://www.esssurplus.com/
Most metro areas have places like ESS.
