looking at lsi9's that have been powered by marantz sr8500 receiver
the sr8500 is not rated 4ohm.. can using that receiver have damaged the speakers??

Depends... The Marantz should be able to drive the speakers to a moderate volume, but if you drive the amplifier into clipping, the Marantz can damage the speakers.
What exactly is the problem with the speakers? -
It's far more likely that the receiver would suffer damage trying to drive a load it's not designed for.Political Correctness'.........defined

no problem really.. just making sure .. buying unseen.. he bought them new and have been using them for 2 years with this receiver.. for music and HT..

I'd pass, because you can't hear them or see them, and anyone under powering speakers like that would most likely also crank on the volume dial without concern. Certain level of risk with this one, you have to decide if it's worth it to you or not.HT SYSTEM-
