Bi-amping with amp?

Hello all,

I am not really thrilled with my low end performance on my RTI-A9s. They are currently powered by a Adcom 555, which gets its input from a YAMAHA RX-V773. What are the thoughts on running bi-amp with that amp? What I mean by this is using the receive for the one of the posts and the amp for the other set. The yamaha supports bi-amping by reassigning the 2nd zone to the primary zone outputs. Yamaha reports it puts out 110wpc, but who actually knows.

Would it be a good idea? Where should I run the cables? (ie amp to the lower, receiver to the uppers?)

Looking for some thoughts, as I don't have the money to upgrade the amp at the moment. If this is a stupid idea, let me know...I'm still new into this world haha.

-Mike

Please list (in detail) your sources and how you want your bass to sound. As others have said ( in previous post) bi amping is mental masterbation if not done correctly ( see multiple threads on the subject) you need exterior xover or you are wasting your time. As said your amp and speaks mmay be fine and not the issue. If you wull providw the info requested we can help. It is very important to describe the bass sound you want! Once I know more I can go into deeper.

The low end will never be great especially if you have a large space to fill. I would look instead into buying a decent subwoofer (or two). Rythmik Audio or PSA have great offerings.

    YAMAHA RX-V773
ADCOM GFA-555 (only feeds the RTI-A9s)
    RTI-A9s x2
    CSI A6 (powered by receiver)
    PSW505 (LFE input)

I the system for TV, music, movies, gaming...ect

I want to be able to tell there is bass coming from the 9s, complementing the PSW505. Currently they barely move, unless I turn the volume up to an unreasonable level (-5dB and higher); then I see some visible movement. I would say my normal listening level is ~20-25

Even when I unplug the PSW505 you can barely tell the 9s have bass.

My receiver is on 4+ for bass. I used the YPAO tuning feature for the rest.

I'm certainly not expecting something like this:

But I feel there should be more coming out of these babies.

What is the sub set at amd do you jave the speakers set to small ( as you should for HT) may want to change setting to large whrn using for stereo. You are experiencing a common problem with trying to do 2 ch and 5 ch on the same system IE a lot of compromizes.

    RTI-A9s - set as large
CSI A6 - set as large
    PSW505 - set as normal

    What would you suggest?

    Thanks!

Is the bass correct in the rears? And are they run from the avr? If so swich speaks front to rear and see if it isn't the adcom.

Go into your menu on the receiver and see what the front left and right speaker levels are set at. Start at 0 and subtract or add a few to even out the sound to your tastes. Turn the YPAO feature off if you can and simply run 2 channel with the fronts set to large and tell the receiver no subwoofer. I'll bet you rethink the need for that 505.

    Tonyb, that did it!

The YPAO tune had the LR dB levels turned down to -2.5. I raised both to 3.0dB and they sound great!

I also turned the 'extra bass' feature off on my receiver :)

Glad you got it to your satisfaction. Though+3 on the speaker levels seems a touch high to me, but maybe your room warrants it. Anyway, those automatic calibration programs in receivers are just guidelines, always re-check settings and adjust to your tastes.

Maybe I was loving the sound a little to much, haha.

What would you consider a good range for speaker levels?

Can't really say pal, the room plays too much into that, speaker placement, your ears. If +3 is what blows your sack back, rock on. Just don't be going crazy on the volume dial is all. Just because you have them amped up, you need to pay attention when that dial crawls above -10 on the dial.
