Overgrowth

I have about 8 ft deep of all sorts of crap growing behind my fence. Rhubarb, ivy, assoeted weeds and other stuff. I got that three pronged serrated attachment for my weedeater and it cut through pretty good. My question is, Should i put round up on everything and start over, or plant some kind of spreading low plant that will choke out everything else.

I am replacing the old crappy wood fence, but am keeping the 4x4 posts. I plan on getting that rubber coated metal fencing and stapling that to the posts. Was thinking that some kind of creeper plant would eventually work its way up the fence and look cool and provide additional privacy.

Forget roundup... get some Crossbow weeds laugh at round up...and in most cases you have to apply more than twice.. Crossbow is what farmers use.

Those attached sprayers suck anyway. It would have taken you forever get a good sprayer.

As for the round-up, it will only be a band-aid. I had a section of crab grass and other broad leaf that I completely torched with round-up at the beginning of the season when it just started to sprout up. A few days later I tilled the area once it was completely browned and torched it again. Less than 2 months later the whole variety popped right back up full and green just like the end of last years season.

Ugh! I know. Stuff keeps coming back. Thats why i was thinking of planting some baddass low spreader that will take over and look ok in the process. Would really lik it to creep up the fence and fill it in. Kinda like Wrigley Field :)

Deron, if you plant a legume (pea plants) that are ground vover, be damn sure you want it forever, i mean forever.

the very link provided earlier names it as an invasive species.

Tree farms have knowledge of and access to every contact herbicide, residual herbicide and preemergent to keep plants from growing amongst their rows of trees both because they rob nutrients and they dont want to deliver weeds to whomever may buy their trees.

the legumes are the one species they just have a devil of a time with, as they can sprout from up to a foot underground depending on the variety.

Not tellin ya to not plant just know what you are gettin

    good luck with it

Ha! That could probably use some attention as well, but after 49 yrs, might need something stronger than Roundup.

Im really not too picky about it. Just want something that will spread and either stay low or possibly creep up the fence. Biggest thing is that it will **** other growth and look ok in the process

Interestingly enough, I have the right tool for the job! It's Pangea powered! You see, I shave my stomach, but leave a narrow vertical line going down which looks like an arrow, because...you know...I don't want the ladies to lose their way. High-five!

Good deal, as it is sure to stay low as that is its growth habit even as it grows into your front yard, the neighbors yard, and anywhere else it chooses, hope you get the overgrowth under control.

As far as the crossbow product, i seriously doubt that grassy weeds are taking over the area you are talking about, more like the ivy and other broadleaf plants and such you mentioned, leaving the amount of 2-4-d per dollar as the deciding factor as to whether you should buy this over something from a big box store.

My experience is since you have done a good job of cutting existing plants to the ground, the emerging green growth will be much more susceptible to any herbicide you choose, and chances of success will be more dependent on reapplication later in the summer as the woody growth you have already cut back is much harder to penetrate and kill.

BTW,2 things, it spreads both from fleshy, hard to kill underground growth known as rhizomes, and the seed can sprout from as far as 6 feet underground, not just the 1 foot i quoted earlier, and vetch is deciduous so in the winter it wont look like anything because it dies back.

I would think twice before planting Crown Vetch. Once that stuff takes hold, it's nearly impossible to get rid of. And, it will spread to areas where you don't want it pretty easily. Around here, they plant the stuff along highways for erosion control.

Would it kill grass and take over the yard?
