Salvation Army Polk 10A find..

So I never really go into any thrift stores anymore, always just a bunch of crap anyway, well I had the day off, washed and waxed the truck, mowed the lawn etc..
Well I went to get a burger at Freddie's, after I got done eating and had nothing else to do, there is a Salvation Army across the parking lot that I have never been in, seen it a bunch of times, so I was like what the hell I will poke my head in..
As I'm walking around I find behind a couch a set of Polk speakers, they turn out to be an early set of 10A's, I do the passive push in test, everything looks to be good, no scratching sounds from the voice coils, I look at the price and it says $15.24 :-)
Hell for that price I ain't got nothing to lose, I brought them home took out the drivers and tweeters and tested them with an ohm meter, all looks good..
The only down fall is the grill covers are missing, and so are the fuses, I'm going to pick up some fuses so I can plug these in and see if they sound ok. If all is good I'm just going to bypass the fuses, I see no reason to use them as I'm not going to crank them to the point of melt down, nor am I going to not power them right..
So with tax it came to exactly $16 for the pair..

Nice!
Look to be in good condition and with peerless.
Just use a piece of wire as fuse for making sure they work but yes, fuse for regular use.
If you are talking about the one on Kipling, I've never gotten anything decent there.

Sweet score Larry! Wutcha gonna do with 'em?
Grilles for those show up, quite reasonably priced, on that auction site every now and then, too. -

Yep on Kipling...
On any other day, I would have never gone in there.. Not sure if I have ever spent a better $16, funny thing is I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them.. LOL!!! -

Sounds like it was your lucky day Larry, $16.00 is a bargain!

Yes I was, I regret selling the pair I had, I personally like the 7's better, I wanted them for a garage set up, and that just might be where these go..
Also as good as these sound, I have never been on the peerless fan band wagon, the 194's, 198's sound much better IMO, I don't hate them just not a big fan of them.. -
Congrats. Will try my luck at local vs this weekend ):

Great buy there, Larry! I'm also missing grills on mine (plan to pick some up from a fellow Polkie though, just haven't gotten around to it).
Personally, I love the Peerless. But that's because they're so mellow.
Enjoy!

I've had over 15 pairs with silver domes and none of them bother me.
I'm not partial to any tweeters (SL2000, peerless, SL2500, SL3000-->like them all) but I've never heard RDO's.
My M7's are in basement and hardly ever get used.Yep, I hate em both too...still waiting to hit my SDA goldmine...one day...I hope lol
I had my share of deals but toolfan's deal is really great as well.
It's destiny.

Congratualtions Larry!
Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Great find Larry!!!! Just a thought here. You might just want to go back to that Salvation Army store and ask if they might have the grills hiding in the back somewhere. Could be they needed to be recovered or just got separated, and they just did not put them back on the speakers. Could be hiding there somewhereSunfire Theater Grand IV

Good to hear you went the route of using the fuses. No matter how old and responsible you are wacky things happen to electronics and if a dollar fuse fuse can protect what has become a fantastic find I would not jump them out. About the grills always a personal taste thing most of my grills are off except of course my Time Frame 350s which are sock dressed.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

Nice score Larry! The funny thing is you could spend over $1.5K on a pair of new speakers and not have a speaker that sounds as nice as the monitor 10. When I was using my 10B’s in my 2 channel setup and thought I would upgrade to a pair of Revel F12’s I was so disappointed that I moved the Revel’s out in short order and went back to the 10B’s. The F12’s were nice speakers but just didn’t have the magic of the 10B’s. I’ve since moved up to a pair of Harbeth’s but I had to put out some good money to top the 10B’s. I still have the 10B’s in my surround setup, just couldn’t part with them.

Reading all these threads has brought back memories. It was in 1981 at the Audiokrafters store in Washington, D.C. that I first heard a pair of Monitor 10's.Paradigm 11seMkIII mains, w/ Zu Audio jumpers

You find any deals at SA around here. I think they have a crew that searches the bay for pricing on their donations and they lean towards the high side regardless of condition.

So what you ended up doing with the 10's Larry?

I have some grills from a some M10's that might fit if you need them. Not sure of the differences between models, if any."Make a man a fire and he'll be warm for a day. Light
