Here it is, on the US Pioneer website, the 28 lbs. PLX-1000. Looks like a Technics SL-1200, doesn't it? It' s priced like the Technics before Panasonic decided to end production of that classic.

Wow looks nice, they were trying to get Panasonic to reintroduce the 1200 but they wouldn't listen.

Interesting... Pioneer is showing it as a DJ turntable... That's why it has a tempo control... This looks like the Audio Technica and Stanton DJ turntables...

interesting. wonder how it compares to the Audio Technica LP120 model. I do like that the Pioneer has provision for separate cables.

    Here's the AT model - http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/turntables/583f30b3a8662772/index.html

I tried out this AT model for a few weeks but ended up returning it to Amazon in the end. can't say too much about the quality either way. it seemed nice, but I don't have any experience with turntables to be able to make any proper assessments. I didn't like that it had attached cables, though. the built in preamp was neat for quick connect if you don't have a phono ready receiver/preamp, and the USB function was pretty neat to use with the included open source Audacity recording software, but I wouldn't use it much for that feature since my collection is already mostly cd or otherwise digital.

be curious to check out the sound quality of the Pioneer...

regarding weight, I wonder how they're actually achieving this with these units. are they all just plastic with weights fastened into the chassis? or is the Pioneer model actually that much better of build quality using metal chassis and case parts? about 4.5lbs diff.

At that price I'd be interested to see how it compares to Audio Technica's slightly higher model table, the LP1240, which weighs almost as much and has greater torque than the LP120 Technica? And is still only half the price of the new Pioneer?

Stereophile has a positive review of this turntable this month. They have done some upgrades though compared to the Technics turntable, including allowing use of detachable power cords and interconnect cables, applying damping where it's needed, and boosting the motor's torque. Seems to be marketed mainly at the pro audio/DJ market with a price without a cartridge of $699, but the improvements probably kick up the performance from a sound quality perspective compared to the Technics model. I would recommend this turntable to someone young who is looking to get into vinyl.

as someone who knows next to nothing about turntables, but is loosely interested, what are some of the features that make a turntable a good one?

The main feature is being intensely interested in getting into vinyl.
The above seems to satisfy my mid-fi tastes. Prolly need a cart tho.

I like it. Over the years I've owned a bunch of TT's and the Technics 1200 was arguably the best from a value/performance perspective. The manual-only functionality was always an issue for me, being happy to trade a little 'audiophile purity' for convenience. This Pio table looks to be an improved version of the 1200, and the specs are at least as good. I'd be curious to see where the street price winds up.

Even at the $699 MSRP, its a heck of a deal. IMO, direct drive vs. belt drive is a no-brainer......even the most esoteric 'modern' tables cannot match the performance of a properly engineered direct drive machine (which is why the Technics 1200 was built for many years.) Of course, wow and flutter and signal-to-noise ratios tell the story, and this table looks very good in those regards. ( To answer msg's question....) Add in the fact that it can be purchased new, with a warranty, and it becomes compelling. Purty, too....

but I still like belt drive too, look at this picture of the pro-ject classic TT the motor has these elastic bands that hook on the 4 tabs you see in the picture and it hangs in the air suspended and turn the platter gently with the belt and it just seems a great way to cut down on vibrations and it may give up a little speed accuracy compared to direct drive. just seems like a good idea to me.
