Anybody have an older iPod w/ a largish hard drive?
Need something to throw music on for my car that I can control w/ the car that can hold decently high bitrate music from my collection lol.
Its got to be one of the following:
Third Gen iPod Firmware 2.3 or later
Fourth Gen iPod Firmware 3.1.1
Fifth Gen iPod Firmware 1.1.2
5.5 Gen iPod Firmware version 1.2.3
First gen iPod Classic Firmware 1.0.3
Hoping to find something on the cheap so let me know if you've got something lying around.
Doesnt have to be super pretty, but has to be in working condition.

Why restricted to those models? If you're looking for one with the Wolfson chip, a) they're overrated and b) you won't hear a difference in the car anyway...

Restricted cause thats what the owners manual says it will work with lol"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
What kind of car do you have?

2010 Nissan Murano. Per the owners manual that all it supports. It "might" work with newer stuff, but I am looking for a decent sized HDD to store some of my 1 TB library on."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Dan why not go with something like this? http://www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backup/dp/B00E83X9P8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1405348073&sr=8-1&keywords=1tb+usb3
If your new one is like the one you sold me, then you should be able to scroll though the folders on the usb just like an ipod...Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

Yep, the current iPod Classic they're selling will work fine in your car, and it's the largest capacity they've ever sold at 160 GB. I"m using one in our car (2011 Infinity FX) and it works fine, Apple hasn't changed this model in several years so it'll work fine for you. So I just leave the iPod connected in the middle console (that's where the connections are in our car), it sure is nice to have instant access to so much of my music using the interface in our car without having cables everywhere.
Having used this setup for a few months now, I'll mention a couple things:
1 - Don't bother with lossless audio files in the car, unless you have a very high end aftermarket system installed AND tend to listen to music a lot in your car while just sitting still. Anyone who knows me knows I've got sensitive ears, and I've done lots of comparisons in the car between lossless and good compressed tracks - to hear any difference I have to turn the engine off and really listen for it and the cabin of our car is a bit quieter than yours. Bottom line, don't bother with lossless track in the car.
2 - If you don't use lossless tracks then you'll need a way to get compressed music on the iPod. iTunes has functionality that will compress your music for you on the fly as it syncs to your iPod, it's the best feature of iTunes IMO. This way you don't have to manage a library of compressed music. I just have the one library of regular lossless and hi-rez tracks, and have my iPod sync set to convert those to 256 files on the fly and it works great. -

It's still an option though, and cheaper than an iPod... -

Can't no USB input, its a factory DIN to 15 pin ipod connector. Otherwise I would try that.
As a stop gap I can burn MP3's onto a CD and load em into the 6 disc player, but its a bit more of a pain to keep reburning them.AsSiMiLaTeD wrote: »Yep, the current iPod Classic they're selling will work fine in your car, and it's the largest capacity they've ever sold at 160 GB. Gotcha. Thats good to know. I may look for one of those. I dont necessarily need lossless, but dont want to downgrade everything to 96kbps either. I was thinking 160 as a stop gap
IIRC MediaMonkey can do the same thing and I would likely use it to do that."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
This is what my front dash looks like, except I dont have the SD flash port on mine.
I've got a composite input in the rear of the center console, and then inside the center console that factor DIN to 15 pin iPod connection.
