.....for a 2 channel receiver that has speaker a+b switching and a decent dac, along with digital inputs. Older....doesn't bother me as long as it sounds good. Some of the older HK's or Marantz ? Outlaw ?

I think the best bang for buck out there for a basic 2ch would be the HK3490 or 3390 series. Not sure on digital inputs though. My neighbor has always run Marantz gear and is very satisfied. Good luck.

The DACs in the HK 3490 are surprisingly good for its price. Yeah, it only has one COAX and one TOSLINK in, but hey it's a two channel stereo receiver, after all. Power is good, A/B switching on the remote, FM reception--pretty good. And it has both pre-outs for R/L and two SUB outs. Hard to beat if you can get it cheap (299 or less).
Outlaws are also good, but pricier.

That's more along the lines I'm looking for. A lot of legacy receivers don't have digital inputs or decent dacs for that matter. Just looking to replace an old Sony receiver I use for my upstairs/deck Sonos, so hence the digital inputs need. Like to keep that as simple as possible.HT SYSTEM-

I have a 3480 (the non-DAC having version of the 3490) and love that thing. I won't be selling it as it sounds good, produces decent power and looks pretty decent/classy too.
I don't think you could go wrong with the 3490 (I use my PeachTree DACiT with mine)."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

Tony, how about this puppy...I have one upstairs that powers my Polk Atrium speakers on the bottom deck. This way you still use the main rig as the control center and you get to use that gorgeous sounding Cary DAC pumping tunes on your deck. For my top deck I just take the Play:5 from the dining room, plug it in for the day & return it to it's resting place when the parties over. SONOS makes it so easy to expand no matter what you have in mind. Just a thought.

I've actually owned that unit Phil, didn't care for the sound too much so I sent it back. Plus I'd like a receiver in that position only for the purpose of the tuner in case the internet goes down, I'll still be able to play tunes out on the deck.HT SYSTEM-

Tony, I would also look into older Denons. They have good DACs and a whole lotta digital inputs (depending on model). By older, I mean ones such as the Denon AVR-4802. Good quality receiver, IMO. Not sure it has A+B switvhing though. I can check on mine and report back.
Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Most all Denon AVRs had A/B switching. The problem? It was often buried 4 or 5 levels deep in your receiver menus. My AVR 2807 is like that. There is NO easy way of switching from the A set to the B set quickly!
Plus, those receivers weigh a ton, well over 35 or so lbs. Whereas the HK weighs only 23 lbs or so and can generate about as much power for its TWO channels as the Denon can?
And I think the HK DACs are on a par with the Denons. We have a thread somewhere on this site where one of our members opened up an HK 3490 and compared its DACs to a much more expensive HK AVR and found the DACs in the 3490 had superior sound for TWO channel stereo. Can't remember where that was. But the DACs used in the stereo unit are different from the ones used in the AVRs.
