Which speakers to use with Yamaha M40 Amp

Hi,

Unfortunately the FAQs also did not help me much on this...

I just bought an Yamaha M-40 amp (2x120W).

I am a little bit confused which speakers would be the best ones for this to make it sound best.
Most Polk Audio speakers I am looking at have a recommended amp power of 10-250W.

Would this amp fine for these or should I rather find speakers with lower recommended amp power? I read somewhere that speakers should have less Watts than the Amp?

Thanks for any advice and all the best,
Marco

    Welcome to Club Polk.

Speaker wattage ratings don't really mean much, nor do they tell you much. You will only fry your speakers if you CLIP them with a cheap underpowered amp. Too much power is rarely a problem. So I would not worry.

Now, having said that. Let's take some speakers that your amp might have some trouble with. Polk Rti-A9s require more power to sound their best than what you have there. So would the older Lsi 9, 15s and 25s.

Otherwise. That Yamaha has decent specs. 120 watts x 2 @ 8 ohms, 170 x 2 @ 4 ohms. Good enough for most newer Polks.

You can run the speakers I say require more power, also, but you have to be careful not to clip and they will not be giving you their full potential, but will still sound OK.
