Small towns in central/western Wyoming, western South Dakota, western Montana, northern Colorado, etc work for me. But I love small towns and wide open spaces and don't like too much heat. Not for everyone but I love this part of the country.

I agree with the wide-open spaces view. Sheridan, Buffalo, and Pinedale, Wyoming are great spots if you truly want to escape city life.

Is there a place in AZ that has the climate of Flagstaff that's a little less expensive?

White mountains/show low? Being closer to Phoenix would not be considered an advantage to me. If I want big city crime/pollution, I'll move back to STL.

No, but my last boss is dead from a heart attack (Met once).
I'm sure the current one is on pressure meds. We aren't angels, that's for sure.

We live in Texas, have lived here all our lives, and I think we're ready to try something new. My work allows me to go wherever I want, so really the only issue would be cost. I make decent money but with the move I'll still be on a Texas salary, so I can't exactly buy a penthouse in Manhattan here.

The main things I dislike about the Dallas area are the miserable summer heat, and the general lack of any reason to be outdoors. There's really nothing to see or do here, there are nice areas but no real scenic beauty.

So I'd like cooler temps and an area that is mountainous, which should go hand in hand I'd think. I'm looking at a few places in Colorado at the moment, but am not set on that and am open to options.

Anyone here care strongly enough to make a case for your home town? I'd like to hear that or any other tips you guys may have.

First day as a member of this forum and your thread caught my eye.

After living in DFW for the past 15 years (Southlake), we recently moved to the Nashville area (Brentwood). Moved for work, but like you, was sick of the summer heat, lack of 4 seasons, and the lack of natural beauty. Have been in Tennessee for the past month and already love it here. Beautifulrolling hills, big trees (compared to Dallas), and very accessible metro area with a ton of cool stuff to do. Still plenty warm here in the middle of the day, but nothing like DFW. The mornings and evenings are comparatively cool, so you get relief from the heat that you really never get relief from in Dallas in the long summer months. Like Texas, no state income tax. I found the Texas people to be very nice, but the folks here seem to be even more laid back and friendly. Good luck with your search!

My wife has the road atlas for Georgia spread out on the table.
I guess she has a plan! Yosemite Sam hit the nail on the head.

Yosemite Sam: Where am I? It sure is powerful warm in here. Is this Dallas?

    Satan: No, but you're close.

Yeah, and both Knoxville and Nashville have lots of cool places within 4 hours or so - beaches, mountains, lots of other cities.

Next year after I'm retired we plan to move from Fullerton, CA to Paradise, CA, in the Sierra foothills. 200 miles north of San Francisco, 100 miles from Sacramento, 13 miles from Chico. Elevation is 2,000 feet, hot summers, not humid, mild winters with plenty of rain. Wood stoves in every home. Trees are everywhere. Paradise/Magalia is a mountain town without the miserable narrow and winding mountain roads like we have here near Big Bear Lake, CA.
We'll be a few hours drive from Lake Tahoe, Reno, Sacramento etc. 200 miles from the coast. Rivers and lakes. Population 26,000 and the speed limit is 25-35 everywhere.
Tony B you are welcome to visit if you get tired of Chicago, I offer 2 weeks free room and board, 3 meals a day, and if you bring Mantis I'll throw in the booze.
I love this forum, but my favorites are Mantis and Tony B.
I mean it, this isn't spam. Hope you like dogs, and not afraid of deer, the deer is all over the town in broad daylight. Decent homes sell from $ 150 K to $ 290 for the really nice ones.

Love dogs.....and deer. Have plenty of deer in my own yard. Consider them pets really, I feed them well enough. Mighty fine invitation there pal, I may take you up on that some day. To tell the truth though, my wife is a better kisser than Mantis, so she'd probably accompany me. Plus she puts out, Dan is a little stingy.

I'm in love with Northern Cali. Spent a lot of time in Napa, San Fran, Carmel/Monterey area. Though many would consider those areas not quite "northern" California in the true sense. It's pretty frickin' cool you get to retire to such a beautiful area. Right now, my wallet says my retirement may wind up in Boise Idaho.

Few years ago we drove to Fort Bragg in the middle of September, from Willits, what a great drive, and after parking the car close to the beach we had to go back for jackets, it was too cold for us, about 11 AM. When we were in San Francisco on vacation, we had to dress up. On my birthday last year in July we had dinner on the Seal Beach pier, near Los Angeles, and we were freezing.
So I don't want to live near the coast, but 15-20 miles inland is fine.
In Paradise we didn't mind the heat, high nineties in September, because the trees are everywhere, shade is everywhere.
I lived 25 years in Europe, Germany, and Hungary, but the climate keeps me from going back, not even a visit.
The wife you can bring, but without Mantis you pay for the beer. I'm counting the months to full retirement, I'll be 67 next week.

So after alot of research and debate I've come to the conclusion that there is no perfect place to live, every single option on our list has drawbacks. Colorado Springs has negatives as well, but most of those we can avoid and the positives outweigh the rest. It's climate is ideal for us, much cooler with lower humidity but without the ridiculous winters. It's also got an environment that we'll actually want to get outside in, the goal is to spend alot more time outdoors and be more active. It's also relatively close to home and easy to fly in and out of and the drive isn't too horrible should that be necessary.

Alot of people say you should live somewhere that alligns with your political and religious values, but I'm not really religious or all that politically inclined so I don't how see that relates to me personally. Maybe I'll realize and regret it when I move to a different area for the first time ever, but right now it's not a major consideration.

So Colorado Springs it is, we're looking at the northern areas of the city and a bit north of that up to Momentum as well, time to find a new house!

Thanks everyone for the input, would be cool to keep this thread going as I think it could be a good resource for someone else as well.

We looked at a couple places in Arizona as well, but a little further from home and where we're looking we have two airports with lots of traffic to Dallas so easy to get in and out of with pretty low fares given the number of options I have. At the end we were deciding from three areas - Flagstaff and Prescott areas, Colorado, and the Asheville area. There were features of all 3 we really liked but ultimately Colorado won out due to proximity to home and airport options. I'll have to fly home for work some and imagine the wife will be homesick the first year and want to come home often as well.

Hopefully I'll ultimately look back on this as a good choice!

    Danny,
I think your choice is wise. If LSAF still continues please come down and visit. We still can plan gatherings at Skips and possibly coordinate our schedule with them.

At least we I can look forward to hanging out with you at RMAF

Keep us posted my friend and as always good luck.
