Not sure if this has already been posted here, but I know some of you HT-philes will be saddened by this news:

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2014/07/03/plasma-tvs-no-more/

Another article mentioned something like all production (LG included) would cease by the end of next year.

Here's to 4K I guess.

As far as I'm concerned plasma died when Panasonic quit making them, which is why I bought a second one as a backup, still in the box...

It actually started when Pioneer bowed out. :(

Just today I bought two used Panasonic Plasma TVs. One 55 inch and one 65 inch, both from the same guy. He got an amazing job offer and is just dumping all his gear. They are in absolutely perfect condition. $800.00 for both and he threw in a "system in a box" 5.1 that he got at Costco. I'm going to give that to a friend that has absolutely no audio. I can't stand watching TV at his house. The only speakers he has are IN THE TV!

But my next new TV is going to be (hopefully) an eighty inch or bigger 4K OLED. I hope that they are out and at least second generation by the time that there is a majority of programming in 4K. And the price is down to around two thousand.

http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?162538-Samsung-Announces-End-To-Plasma-Displays And it's a sad thing because that just takes away a cool option.

When Pioneer bowed out, Panasonic had already been building their hardware for them for 5 years. They used to be Matsu****a and panasonic was only a brand name like Technics was. Pioneer was using their software on Panasonic built hardware. Not that that is a bad thing.

If you have a Panasonic Viera Plasma TV though, you essentially have a Pioneer plasma. When Pioneer announced the end of their TV's, Panny bought the KURO rights and started developing it further to bring in the newer features that other TV's had so that the plasma would be competitive in the market.

The funny thing was, Pioneer's plasma display company was bought from NEC in 2004. Before that, the displays they were making were ground-breaking and insanely expensive. The cheap one was like $11K in 1998 which was as much as a Hyundai Accent. If it wasn't for buying the NEC production systems and the contracting with Panasonic, they never would have been at the $4500-$6500 price point. Still, the lack of low-end models is what killed the Pioneer brand. The cost of making a display was high but performance was much better than anything LED, LCD or DLP on the market. But people were willing to take a performance hit for a display that was 1/3rd the price of the comparable plasma.

It'll be a sad day when my Panny Plasma dies and I can't get it fixed.

Agreed and IMO the last couple years of the higher end Panasonics were every bit as good as the high end Pioneer models. The Panasonic ZT60 I bought last year is the best looking display I've ever seen at any price, and the ST60 I bought as a backup isn't very far behind. I know eventually I'll have to move beyond plasma and already have for the 4K display I'm using as a gaming monitor for my PC, but I"m hoping the two plasma TVs will hold me over until something as good hits the market...
