I sometimes play a little game with myself, seeing what single item I'd have if I could have only one thing. I think the Futterman/Stax would be it, just too cool.

12 tubes and only for STAX headphones? Well, you got me there. I had no idea that such a thing even existed!

The output tubes are paralleled to lower the output impedance of the tubes so that they would match the input impedance of the headphones (or, "earspeakers" as Stax called them). This means the amp doesn't need an output transformer for matching. While I haven't heard all of the available current headphones (I doubt if anyone has, there's so many) the Stax remain in my audio memory as the most realistic.
I once had an eccentric audiophile (even for an audiophile) customer who used Stax headphones for all his listening and sat on his sub-woofer for bass. He said that his spinal column transferred the bass frequencies better than his hearing could. Kind of like today's "bass shakers" coupled with room-ignoring headphones.

Interesting Ken, wonder if he listens that way naked. Certain pants material can act as a filter of those bass frequencies ya know. In order to keep the signal pure, he has to be naked, no ?

But certain pants may create warmth while others are a little harsh...you know it's all about synergy

This conversation is reminding me of the old Howard Stern bit.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

    Hi Tony,
I think that is called "cheek flutter" distortion similar to "port flatulence" noise that causes an unwelcome blossoming.
