Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

I have always been impressed by great drummers that can make music banging around. Drums in music is like flying a helicopter, all four plus the brain

Nice! That's a bit closer of a battle then Buddy and Krupa on the Sammie Davis show.

I'm going to be Ed Shaughnessy for Halloween this year.

Moon and Bonham would probably be drunk enough to get up there with Buddy and make fools of themselves. The other rock stars mentioned would more than likely run the other way. Smart. Shaughnessy is happening.

To me Krupa "swung" better, not as flashy but more "danceable". Rich has the reputation of being a martinet to work for and often a verbal abuser. There's an infamous audio tape of him browbeating his band after a gig on the band buss for no apparent reason. Only Charlie Mingus would have been a worse boss to work for, he once hit a trombone player in the mouth after a missed cue.

I always got a kick out of Ginger Baker, poor guy drove himself crazy trying to play as loud as Jack Bruce's amp's LOL.

Buddy Rich was a phenomenal drummer; yes, crazy and borderline out of control like so many drummers (Jim Gordon, of course, being an extreme case) -- it's just that I always got more of a Keith Moon-style zany insanity (how's that for an imperfect rhyme?) vibe from Animal than a Buddy Rick vibe, George. I wasn't equating them in terms of ability to hit the skins per se. Just thought I'd clarify that.

... and I have no comment on John Bonham... never thought him worthy of comment (but what do I know?).

There's a documentary on Ginger Baker available from Netflix to show you his personality, warts and all. Another master swing era drummer is Baltimore raised Chick Webb who was handicapped. The famous 1938 battle of the swing bands between the Savoy Ballroom's Chick Webb band and the Count Basie band with Gene Krupa is still being debated between jazz historians. If I had a time machine and a tape recorder!
The swing bands created the modern era drummers, placing them high up on the bandstand, shining spotlights on them and giving them plenty of space to solo.

I like Keith Moon. I like when he plays the drums. I like a lot of drummers and love to hear them play the drums. None of them can play the drums like Buddy Rich. He was the man.

Ella Fitzgerald got started with Chick Webb's band, or was the featured vocalist when she was very young. He was a tiny hunchback.

Ginger Baker seemed to sit idle after Cream, or at least didn't do anything worth mentioning until the "Ginger Baker Trio" thing with Bill Frisell. Those lp's are pretty good.

I have a copy of that incident where Buddy berates the band on the tour bus during the intermission. Sounds like an old portable cassette copy, maybe a tiny machine that was in somebody's pocket. He is as nasty as a human could be. The things he says and threatens are evil. To me, what is hilarious, is the mad stampede to get off the bus when he's finished with them and tells them to get back inside and play like professionals, or he would leave them there. The tape recorder is still running and it's a free-for-all getting off cause nobody wants to be the last one on the bus with him alone. I asked him for one of his sticks once and I thought he was going to punch me. Still the best.

If you'll remember Johnny would always introduce Rich as "Mr. Warmth", kind of an insider's joke I suspect.

There's a story that Baltimore guitarist Carl Filipiak (his wife works at Polk) tells about Ginger. Carl was providing guitar support for a drum seminar that featured Baker. Carl is pretty excited, a chance to hang out with someone who's played with Clapton, one of Carl's heros. After a while, Ginger asks if he could have a cup of hot tea.
Carl scrounges around, finds a styrofoam cup, a Lipton tea bag and a source of hot water. Presto, hot tea! He gives this to Baker who throws it down and huffs, "That's not a proper cup of tea!".
By the way, Henson modeled the "Animal" character on Baker, wild hair and all.
