Today's Road Trip

Got up early this AM and folded the seats down in the SUV and headed to the fine state of Maryland. It was just one of those nice trips you know? No traffic a little cloudy and about 213 miles to my destination. I met a fellow Polkie down there; Someone who needs to be around a bit more but none the less a fine gentleman and I am sure that anyone who knows him would agree. I met up with MLong and we loaded a pair of speakers from his nice setup that he was willing to part with...They fit perfecty with less than an inch to spare (good thing I measured). Someday he might regret it, but he has visitation rights to come visit them anytime he passes thru NJ.

So i have seen lots of you fellow Polkies pix, and heard all of your comments, and honestly I haven't listened to a set of these since the 80's when I would visit my friend who worked at Atlantic Stereo in East Brunswick NJ back in the day. I always wanted a pair and waited till now to fulfill my bucket list on these.

I was able to unload them and strap them to a dolly and got them in all by myself which is an impressive feat if I do say.I hooked them up to my Yamaha M80 using my Marantz 2385 as the pre; I was sure they would enjoy the POWER the M80 puts out... I had these in mind when I bought the M80 from Falconcry (another fine Polkie I might add).


To paraphrase Chief Brodie "I think were gonna need a bigger boat" but I stuffed them into my listening room and plugged em in. Now mind you this room is probably better suited for a pair of SDA CRS but I am determined to move these to a more fitting destination.

My first impression is effing WOW!

Better than when I heard them 30 years ago.

Some observations:

Don't think I'll be using my sub anymore....

Might need to tape up the window behind me...

The M80 gives it adequate juice for sure sounds so rich in Class A mode.

These things were made to last a 100 years

So I cleaned off the tops and the grills...I then treated the cleaned wood, and voila... like new!

Now you've gone and done it! Congrats on your new SDA's! If possible, get those beauties in a little wider space and the soundstage will literally floor you, those four dimensional drivers are awesome!

I sold a nice pair of 2.3's this past winter to fund the rebuild of my 2.3TL's, wish I could have kept them also. I don't have to tell you; "You need to rebuild the x-overs and other tweeks" cause I know you will!

In time yes... they will be in a new house, and yes will tweek... probably do the RDO-194-1's asap... although maybe it's just the newness, but I am not minding the sl2000's as I did the monitor 5's. I think Mr. Trey will get more of my $$$ too.

Nice score! Not trying to be a d*** but I think you have the speakers reversed. If you look on the 2.3 wiring schematic located on the sticky of this forum section, it shows the 4 stereo drivers being on the inside. Thats the way I've always seen them setup. Also remove the speakers between the 2.3s and the sidewalls. Ideally you want at least 3 feet of clear space between SDAs and the sidewalls if you have the room to do so. You also want the speakers to be 6-8 feet apart. I've had my SRS 2s setup in a room that was just not big enough to get the ideal setup. I experimented until I found the best setup for the room. It made a huge difference. Again not trying to be a d***, just trying to help you get the most out of those bad boys. Congrats and enjoy!

On the non TL 2.3's the stereo drivers are the two lone ones and should be on the inside. The dimensional drivers are the two middle ones in the array of four and should be on the outside. You have them set up correctly.

Hey Dawg. I think he has them correct. The 2.3 are reverse of the 2.3 TL. I am not home to check, but I have mine set up the same way as the OP according to my past post pics.

Nah I get em right I checked the one that says left is on the left and the one that says right is on the... the 2.3 tls are just the opposite.

Yeah I gotta get a better room... hopefully moving before winter... they do sound great tho!

K, cool. Learn something new everyday. I had my SRS 2s in a similar sized room. I made sure I kept the side clearance at least 3 feet from the sidewalls and had the speakers set about 4.5-5 feet from each other. It wasn't the recommended setup, but it sure sounded great! I think the most important thing is to keep the recommended sidewall clearance to get the full SDA effect. Ymmv.

My "new2me" SDA SRS 2.3's

Wait... I want them back. They didn't look THAT good at my house. It was a pleasure to pass them on to someone who will truly appreciate them. I really love the message board because I get to meet fellow enthusiasts and really get to appreciate different speakers and setups. whether buying or selling or just looking at pictures.

I'm glad you got them back home OK and missed all of the traffic. The photos look outstanding and it was a pleasure to meet you.
