resurgence of vinyl

On the 8:30 segement of CBS Morning News they just ran a piece on how vinyl records are making a comeback. I believe here at the forum it's been known for a long time and some like me have gotten back into the spinning of clean LPs. They featured the 2 guys who are from the Black Keys and in their contract they insisted on a certain number of albums be pressed and if sold repressed. Reporter Anthony Mason pointed out that there was a nice percentage up tick on album sales and I forgot the number but he also added that those numbers are a little off because there are so many indie lables now that are producing LPs. The crew asked if mostly only vintage vinyl was popular and he replied that even Lady Gaga has albums so very present artists are going the way of the vinyl record saying" there is something to playing a record that you don't just get from digital or streaming"

Funny...Stereophile did a throwback post in response to that segment on Facebook. It was an article of theirs from 1990 talking about the resurgence of vinyl.

Well I never left. Always kept it. Quit buying for a while when my kids were little and finances were tight. One of my twin boys loves vinyl. The other doesn't care much but does enjoy music. I'm kind of glad there are more record stores around but not glad some of the prices are seeming to go up. I Have a Matt Nathanson lp on green marbled vinyl that is awesome! Other then him not too much new. I have picked up some rare lp's that have been newly repressed. They seem to sound as good as some others form that era. IDK about the whole 180 gram thing. Jury's still out there! Hate I missed that segment.

Lada Gaga? Well here's a story for you. I'm in Beijing for a year on sabbatical doing some research and some teaching. One of my Graduate students asks me what I think of Lady Gaga (he's a fan). I say, "Lady WHO?" I had no idea what he was talking about, never heard of her (that was four years ago). He proceeds to list the songs he's into and I get schooled on American POP culture in China! lol

Vinyl? I spin some but it's not my primary medium, too many memories (snap, crackle, pop), too retro, too nostalgic. I also believe that issuing new albums on vinyl is a fad that is currently "cool" for a younger generation that is mesmerized by the turntable, the material and having something that most others do not. When it ceases to be a fad, we'll see how many albums get released this way.

I have nothing against the medium. But my experiences were from the bottom of society. Those who could never afford those higher end tables, VPI cleaning machines, wondrous tonearms and cartridges. At best, we had some cheap Garrard or BSR all-in-one system that slowly wore away your vinyl and some second rate speakers which sounded OK but nothing special. Maybe I still carry a chip on my shoulder from that time. lol

This peak will turn into another valley when every kid has it and its no longer 'unique'. It has nothing to do with the music and everything to do with the 'cool' factor. Nothing stays cool forever.

agreed. Its probably a hipster trend. But maybe, just maybe some of those folks will come to appreciate the SQ. They will get rid of the turntable when its no longer cool and then miss the SQ, maybe. At least we can hope.

I don't have a TT, but its due to too many young children in the house. I still like that's its a trend because it returns the focus to an album as a work of art as opposed to just singles, in addition to the potential SQ converts...

Maybe not so coincidentally I've been seeing a fairly large amount of tt on the central Jersey C/L. Everything from Technics,Dual 1009s,1225s multiple Thoren 160s, yes a plastic Garrod and others. I have to admit I also have Madonna in my collection although not on vinyl. I found when working drilling out houses for my alarm systems lively pop music was the best to blast and work through. I do agree w/ some of you that it just has a yuppie cool factor that will again wain like it did just because of the fragility of albums and you just can't bounce around if your still able to like you can running a cd or other digital device.

Well... When you have a great phono pre-amp (i.e. not the one I currently own), a good cartridge ($100 and up), a nice turntable and LPs in perfect or brand new condition (or correctly washed using a Nitty Gritty or similar cleaning system), the sound is really really great. No crack or pop.

I mean, I won't argue if it's better or not than CDs or lossless as it is a different experience. You're closer to the medium, and it's more involving than loading a couple of files on your HTPC or picking up a CD on your loader: you come to enjoy the music in a different way, and for many, it's better that way. However, I do get that right now, a lot of young ones who own LPs do it for the cool factor, as many pointed out... But still, I bet they wouldn't do it if it sounded like a compact cassette: sure, they may own a turntable because it's cool (and DJs are cool, right?) but also because it sounds good.

On a personal note: If one day I come to have a lot of money to spare, I'll give it a try by buying a cleaning system and a lot of bargain bin LPs. Manual (hand) washing doesn't seem to do anything good on my old LPs: still a lot of crack and pops.
Speakers: Polk Audio LSiM 705, LSiM 703, LSiM 704c

CD's are a good medium...but the whole issue is the warmth and presence...dude...you hit the nail on the head with that one!
