This is pretty interesting. Makes you wonder when something will happen, and luck will not be on our side.

I found this amusing...from one of the comment:
The plane suffered "a failure of the right wing."

It seems we have some historical precedent for our present-day right wing failures.

Double post fail. I blame my education. Or perhaps politics.

We almost nuked Spain, which is almost as bad as nuking yourself. I'll bet THEY would've been pissed. B-47's almost nuked Georgia I believe.

That was in the good old days when 1/3 of the SAC manned bomber force was constantly in the air. With real nukes. 1/3 on airborne alert, 1/3 on ground alert, and 1/3 for local training missions or in maintenance.

A whole lot of people were sent in to clean it up, and a lot of those
    guys died young.

Nice and scary. Dad was stationed in Goldsboro in the late 60's/ early 70's, and then we lived there when he was stationed in Korea in the 80's. Nice to know I lived in a place that could have in theory not have been on the map at that point.......

In the video with the blonde newsreader, I was edumacated to learn the bombs were each capable of emitting 3.8 megatons of gas.

    Yeah, that's right ....... GAS

Guess it must have been a hydrogen bomb. 3.8 megatons of hydrogen gas is a lot of gas. : ' )

I'll bet if that gunner in the **** end was asleep, he woke up when that vert. stabilizer departed with a bang and flew about 5 feet over his head. I wonder if he even waited to be told to punch out.

A "D" model gunner punched out once. He lost communications with the rest of the crew, and didn't realize it until they started the descent into the low-level part of the mission. So, he doesn't know if they're descending for that, or if everybody up front is incapacitated due to oxygen deprivation or something. So he left. The "D" was the only model bomber with the tail gunner stationed in the tail, and didn't have access to the rest of the airplane during flight. The "G" and "H" model gunners sat up front with everybody else.

It was a shame about the one crewman who was so close to being found, but the winters in that area are really severe. There's a commemorative plaque on Route 40 near the Castleman River thanking the people in the area for searching for survivors. The Air Force removed the two bombs on flatbed trucks and told everyone that they couldn't have detonated.

Wow! Just spoke to my dad about this. Dad was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro when this happened. My mom and oldest sister were living in Goldsboro also. Dad said he remembered the incident. He said that they told him that the firing pins on both bombs were not in place and didn't know that the second bomb could have went off. Needless to say, I'm really glad neither one went off.

That is a shame. I didn't realize not everybody made it, only the pilots.
