I saw these 12s on C/L and this guy is into trading. He has on another ad an Adcom set of a 535 amp and a 400 pre which I just asked him about if he would split the set. My question is about those 12s, the tweeters and x-overs look exposed and I don't think that was intended. Are there full covers for those things and are they hard to get. Another thing in terms of box monitors how do 12s rate against say good looking 10s w/ stands. Oh one other question, were these the 1st out of body tweeters ever done like B&W does and some other makers these days.

The crossover and tweeter were designed as "open air" and have a top hat cover that is a frame of wood, metal rods, and plastic covered in fabric. My 12c's sound awesome and go deeper than my 10a's and have a bigger sound stage. If he has the top hats and they are in nice shape they may be worth $350. Perhaps a bit high since you will probably need to rebuild the crossovers and may want to upgrade the tweeters to RDO-194's. Not sure about other speakers that use the open air design except the Technics SB-7070 that is pretty rare and is supposed to sound exceptional. Google the Technics for additional info.

You are going to have a hard time finding covers for them if he doesn't have them. I have M12 Series 2 speakers and I liked them
better than the M10's I had in the mid range. From what I hear the 12C's are very good speakers that most members seem to like.

12b's are great speakers, c's are better. Top hats are very rare to buy. Price not a steal, but dependind on condt without has id offer a duce and if you wany them bad maybe 250.00 max. But if you cant find a better pair (or c's) get them.PS: Ive had the b's and loved them only replaced by the c's! See sig.

Thanks guys ,I don't want them they would never fit in my apt unless I thin my other sets and after fully modding my 2bs I can't see them being better, different yes but better I have doubts. I was very curious in those top mounted tweeters and x-overs being all that exposed being a major dust collector and could see them easily damaged in a move. Since you previewed your sigs I will do likewise.

Modded 12C's are very, very good speakers. They produce one of the best soundstages I've heard, are incredibly smooth, have deep punchy bass and a smooth midrange. Mine are fully modded, thought, with Sonicaps/Mills + some other tweaks.

I'd say $350 is a little steep, since it would take some coin to rebuild both the upper and lower Xovers.

I had a friend who had some & they looked in decent condition from pic i saw (minus sagging hat) & he tried powering them with a Pioneer sx737 & he said they sounded terrible. Im thinking that he didnt have them hooked to the right amp. He sold them off for cheap $$$. They dip down low on the ohm's dont they

RTA 12's need a lot of power. I have run mine on a re-conditioned Yamaha CR-2020 and they sound great. Running them off my Adcom GFA-555 makes them really sound good.

I got my 12's for $200. I think that is a little steep. Vintage Polk's around here tend to be a little higher imho too!

Dont let the top mounted xovers concern you. For moving they unmount very easily.plus they will give the 2 series polks a run for the money.ive had 2b's and imho they sounded better ( too my ears) than the 2 b's. Just my preference I guess.

One other thing about 12B's and C's - they are mirror imaged. IOW, there's a left and right speaker and if you set them up on the wrong side the imaging collapses and they sound terrible.

Yes. When i heard he was going to sell them off because they sounded bad - i told him to put some power to them & he sold them off. If i had the space i woulda jumped on them. IIRC he unloaded them for 150.00 :( sad day when you want them-but dont have the space to hide them
