Amperes???

I'm gonna get myself kicked out of this forum if I don't quit asking questions...if anyone can refer me to a book to get most of my questions answered, I'm not opposed to reading.
Anyway, what's the deal with amperes? I know that more is better, but that's about it. Why don't all receiver manuals list them? On another thread I posted, someone mentioned that that H/K with 45 amps might drive my 150s, what does this mean, and why is 45 amps better than 30 (my current Oink Tx595 only has 30 (had to contact Onkyo to get that info))?
Thanks again for the info...

Why dont receivers post the ampres? They DONT want you to KNOW how many ampres it has.....
I could imagine some numbers now........5? is that even possible? lol
Ampres is like current, the more ampres, the more current is can push *from my understanding*. 15 more ampres is HUGE.......
Hmm, how many ampres are my Adcoms?
Again - from my understanding- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
H/K recievers list thier amps, I believe the H/K AVR 630 has 50amps.

So what's considered to be good, in the mid range market, or is there such a standard? -
I think....
35 ampres is the benchmark for high current? Not totally sure..- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Amps are a unit of current flow. Voltage pushes current through a load (speaker) or E=IR. Current flow creates heat which obviously can melt components. If an amp can dissipate the heat generated from high current operation then it can drive lower impedance speakers without overheating. All HK amps that I know of can drive 4 Ohm speakers. The current drawn is dictated by the Voltage from the amp and the Impedance of the speaker at the frequency of the signal.Graham

Probably ought to disqualify myself here since I'm the one that said your HK has a chance to drive your 150's, but WTH...
Amplifiers do have to deliver more current into lower impedance loads to produce the power needed. High Current Capacity (HCC) is a measure of an amp's ability to do so. Two provisos enter here:
- Speaker impedance ratings are nominal ratings, i.e., a speaker's impedance can dip even lower for certain frequencies and when a speaker is driven hard for periods of time (voice coil heating); and
- HCC ratings are not for always for continuous output.
Delivery of 15 amperes is fairly low and typical of amps that struggle with loads less than 8 ohm. Amps with the ability to deliver 45 amperes are getting in the neighborhood of handling 4 ohm loads. Some (Sunfire/ Rotel/ B&K) can deliver 70 or more amperes.
The higher the HCC the better for lower impedance speakers. How much is enough depend on the speaker and your listening levels.More later,

can anyone refer me to a book
amazon.com has lots of books on the subject, type in home theater (or something similar) there are a number out there. Home theater for dummies was pretty good.
More amps usually is better, but not necessarily. It takes 2X the amps to make the sound 3db louder (the lowest percetible change). Therefore you would ususally want to double the power to get "louder", which remember, isn't always better. As always trust your ears, and not what obsessive/compulsives have to say. There are two ways to argue with women. Both of them are wrong. -

I believe you're speaking of watts here, not amps, am I correct? I've read that bit on the Polk site before. -
Yes, current is measured in Amps, power is measured in Watts. It Takes twice the Watts to double output (3dB).Graham

If we don't consider derating the fuse, than the total power available would be 120V*11A = 1320 watts - 100 watts = 1220 *0.75 = 915 / 7ch = 130 watts / ch which are still below the 170 watt/ch ratings.
I feel sorry for someone who listens to all seven channels at 95W/channel, that is damn loud....There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction.
