The magnitude of that endeavor is mindboggling - as well as the stakes and the cost.

H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music.

    Every year on Memorial Day I watch the opening scene in "Saving Private Ryan." You state it well that it's mindboggling.

    I think I may change my custom and watch this scene on the actual D-Day anniversary and pick various scenes from Band of Brothers for my Memorial Day viewing.

    I heard a fantastic discussion yesterday on NPR discussing all of the hurdles they had to overcome to pull it of. History often depends on a small gust of wind to totally change the future.

    D-day was an absolutely staggering achievement. Hard to believe it was 70 years ago today. Thank god Hitler was such a micro manager and crappy strategist and tactician. If he had given Rommel a free hand it might have been even more difficult than it was.

    Not sure how much awareness the younger generations have about WWII, but it's difficult to understand the world if you don't have knowledge of it.

    Glad to see the vets still alive are being honored; they're all heroes.

    WWII, a watershed for civilization that everyone here can agree about! Imagine that! What ever happened to the things that hold us together as opposed to the absurd things that pull us apart. Not simply God and Country (one country). But humanity and the world vs. the opposite in Hitler and total enslavement.

    Do we really need a common universal enemy to work together?

    In any case a day to always remember because it was good and just, the right thing to do. And we didn't NEED any talking heads RIGHT or LEFT to pontificate about it!

    Funny you bring up the poor tactical leadership of Hitler. At this time, he was convinced that Patton was the real threat and told Rommel to stand fast and wait for him. So... Rommel waited for Patton and his battalion of Goodyear Battle tanks that never came...the tanks were made of RUBBER!, and Patton was in charge of them as punishment for slapping a soldier and accusing him of dereliction of duty as he was in bed recovering from injury.

    My grandfather would have been at Omaha Beach had he not sustained a compound leg fracture while training. God bless the men still with us and especially those that have gone to their rest. Thanks to all of them.

    The NPR broadcast I referenced before said that Rommel was actually away on that day visiting relatives and preparing to meet with Hitler in Bavaria when D-Day occurred. Apparently, those under him failed miserably to deal with the attack. Again, one of those "whatif" questions. What if Rommel had been there. Only a few changes in that day may have seen history changed so much.

    Hitler invading Russia was the biggest mistake... prior to that, Russia was identified as an Axis power. The Red Army even fought with the Germans as allies in the fall and division of Poland.
