gnats what keeps them away?

Well the **** gnats so they are called round these here parts, are out in full force for the past week now and causing havoc on any outdoor activities. I think this year's crop are immune to the following remedies, citronella, any kind of off products be it regular or deep woods, absorbine junior, and vanilla extract.

They ruined my fishing and mountain biking, this past weekend caught fish and did some riding, but got eatten alive doing so. I cut grass last night covered in absorbine junior still got bothered. I got back from walking the dogs I covered myself with vannila, absorbing and deep woods off the combo of all 3 did stop them for a while but they ganged up on us even the dogs wanted to go home.
Does anyone have any remedies besides the ones I just mentioned?

    AVON Skin So Soft. Don't know about the Skin So Soft bug guard, but When we marched Friday afternoon parades in college, the original stuff was unbeatable in hot weather against sand gnats in Charleston, SC.

    South American gnat-eating bats. They ARE a little bigger than the gnats, but they won't crash into you all the time.

    Vanilla works very well... and you smell yummy too. We used vanilla to keep the gnats away when playing sports in high school.

    eating lots of onion seems to help, and we use deet here in the navy. off deep woods seems to work pretty well, and i keep earplugs handy when they are looking for a home in my ear.

    A change of location might be in order? There's not much you can do as noted above.

    Up where I live we have Black fly season which is almost upon us. Nasty buggers that swarm and can bite some. We just live through those weeks. And, of course, I've seen a LOT worse in developing countries where it really is unbearable during certain seasons.

    What can we do but commiserate!

    I wonder if there are any South American gnat eating bats somewhere in Jersey in a underground exotic animal shop if so George you could make a killing here in the Upper Midwest! As far as dryer sheets what brand and what do you do pin them on your shirt or something? We want to enjoy the yard tonight drink some brews listen to tunes, so maybe I will take Jesse's advice and take a couple of cans of the wife's hairspray a few bic lighters and we will torch the basties!
