Suggestions for new bookie speakers for my son's birthday.
Right now Jr. is using RTiA1s and he's pretty happy with them but he needs something more accurate as he's using them to monitor the mix in his small recording studio. He likes the RTiA's but since it's rear ported the sound tends to get mixed up behind his three tiled monitors and gets all boxy sounding.
I was thinking something along the lines of Totem Rainmakers or similar. Would like the budget to be around $300. Have heard some good things about Energy bookies as well as Wharfedale Diamonds 10.1. Any suggestions? I'm open to used if anyone here is selling something that fits in with what I'm looking for. Local sale on Long Island sweetens the deal.

We were toying with the idea of adding an inexpensive tube amp to the mix and take out the tripath amps he's currently using. The sound could open up with that kind of upgrade.TV: 65" Samsung QLED 4K

Pioneer Bookies. BS-SR22-LR or whatever their nomenclature is.I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

Get some Yamaha NS10 Monitors if you want to mix. They're just about in every studio as a standard Bookshelf reference. Not the best sounding but FLAT! Very FLAT!

Older B&W DM series? I sold a pair to young fellow who wanted them specifically for mixing. Sealed.

You're not getting a pair of rainmakers for $300, and while they sound great they're probably not the best for mixing. They're a very musical speaker, but not the most accurate.

not accurate enough for a studio monitor, they sound good but not ideal for recording or mixing

Thy're big and ugly, but I use m5s with peerless in a nearfield office rig and while not entirely neutral (I mean seriously, what speaker is), they don't have any major frequency peaks or dips. The bass extension is excellent, and the passive radiator means that you can place them close to a wall. There are a bit warm sounding, so you would need to keep that in mind, but overall a pretty accurate speaker for a budget price.
My other suggestion would be NHT SB2 or SB3. Acoustic suspension with solid bass extension (especially the 3), pretty darn revealing and accurate for the price. In fact one major complaint about that series is that they make bad recordings sound really bad, nothing there to sugercoat the ****. The one problem is that they need power; I tried running the SB1s with a sub on a t-amp, no go, sounded horrible, You'll want a good 100 watts of ss power. Another good thing is while there are not forward sounding like the super series was, they are not really laid back either, which makes them good for mixing.Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

PSB Image B6's are being discounted on AA. A great all around full size bookie. PSB's build quality always impresses me, even their entry stuff. PSBs rarely go on sale, maybe a new model coming soon? I don't know if you can do much better for $300.

The SB3 is a good suggestion, which becomes an even better speaker with crossover upgrades, tames that metal dome quite nicely and lifts a veil. I also added Hurricane nuts to the woofers. Amazing bass from such a small speaker. I've driven them with a 75wpc tube amp and currently a 70wpc SS integrated. Great results with both.Political Correctness'.........defined
