Which is what his father was doing, trying to teach him a life lesson as his father taught him. Might have even worked if some stranger hadn't stuck his nose in business he had no place in.

Absolutely...and on bikes we road 20 miles away with no concerns. Today, some school districts won't even let you ride a bike to school. But it's McDonalds fault your kids fat ? A lot of school districts are limiting or doing away with physical ed....aka Gym class. I believe the general belief is the lack of physical activity is to blame for the rise in obesity....yet nobody addresses that problem in the school system or at home.

A have a niece who teaches in a affluent suburb here in Chicago. She tells me the kids are allowed to wear ear buds during class, listening to music off their phone. Also that when she gives homework and tells the kids it's due by x date, they can hand it in 2 months later with no penalty. I about fell off my chair on that one.

My sister in-law runs the lunch program at an even more affluent area for a school district. Know what the biggest complaint she gets from middle school parents ? Hold on....

The presentation on the plate is wrong....like it's the frickin' Ritz ? Yeah, that's their concern...presentation on a plate for middle school kids. Not that little Johnny can't frickin' read in 7th grade, or is an introvert from sitting inside playing video games after school.

I would go ballistic if I had kids in public school today.

That's pretty much the theme in most highly educated, smart people. I have a relative, extremely smart, maybe even a genius by some standards. Dude can't tie his own shoes or write a check from a checkbook....seriously, flips him out.

I get it. Im gettin old myself and have seen some of the crap going on. I wont let my 13 yr old have a smartphone yet. He has a standard cell phone, an xbox 360 and access to our computer pretty much whenever he needs it. Im in education. At our school we do pocket checks every morning. EVERYTHING. is left in the office untill the end of the day. Of course our school is a little different and not not near the size of a traditional school. I dont see why kids need their cell phones at school. Keep them at home or at worst, in their lockers.

I had to walk 2+ miles EACH WAY to both jr. and sr. high. In New England winters. The town set the parameters for the bus routes.
Anyone INSIDE the 2.5 mile perimeter, was NOT allowed to get a bus pass.

Times change fellas, there are simply too many weirdos out there running around looking to snatch up kids to be letting an 8 year old boy walk home from that distance. He was lucky he wasn't picked up by one of those and it had a happy ending. They could have found him in a ditch dead instead. It HAS happened, that is a high price to pay for supposedly "teaching him a lesson!"

Just how well could an 8 year old boy fight off a full grown adult to get away? Who knows how isolated this route home was.

We all need to stop living in the past, and start facing the truths about TODAYS society, and some of what might have worked back then, is simply to risky in todays world.

Some of YOU need to start applying some common sense as well.

Well said Cathy! As a parent, you can never be too safe. There is way too much to this story NOT out there to rush to judgment! I would do anything, ANYTHING to keep my children safe. Regret is not something I want when it comes to my kids.

Some people let life happen to them; some make life happen. I don't buy into the throwing your arms up and accept that things can't change, mentality. It's defeatist, and means that you will allow yourself to continue to accept every change/lessening of values and hide behind it as indefensable.

It's just not the way I am wired. If children cannot disappear all day and play, we need to figure out why; not just accept it. When you begin to accept these things, you become a victim of society.

I have a feeling Jesse came up much like me. where we disappeared all day and played our hearts out. back in the early 60's, questionable neighbors didn't last long in the neighborhood. The fathers (read that: MEN) of the neighborhood kept a close eye on the wierdos, and made sure they knew it. I remember 1 such miscreant, whose home we were all told to stay clear of; anywho, word got around he beat his wife. That evening, with quite a few neighborhood men in tow, HE got his butt kicked, quite thoroughly in his own front yard.

Things just worked themselves out back then. peer pressure is an amazing tool.

I have to disagree somewhat. Safety and kids has to be finely balanced so that they get to experience things, while minimizing risk. Keep them in a test-tube, and they never get to learn vital life lessons, or coping skills. It's important that they develop trust/confidence in themselves as well.

    Yet, there it is.
There was one of those creeps that showed up to the local grade school.
It happened a block from the school. Fortunately, an adult walking their child
saw it and he drove away. They found him the next day a town over from us at another grade school.
It's a reality you have to be aware of. It's not like the small town I grew up in where
    everyone knew everybody.

Society always had creeps in it, even when we were young. You just hear about it more now because of technology. Doesn't mean there is any more or less of creepy people out there today than years ago.

So lets recap....kids can't walk a mile alone, ride a bike alone any distance or in some cases even to school. Gym class is being dropped left and right and you are not capable of packing a proper lunch for them. If you spank them, that's child abuse. If you discipline them, if they get a failing grade or don't get a trophy.....your **** with their emotional feelings. If asked to turn in assignments on time and they don't....that's ok, you the teacher can't punish them for that or lesson their grade.

Nobody see a pattern here ? A total 180 from how most of us were raised ? That doesn't concern you ?

Yes Tony there is a pattern, but so it the pattern of both parents working long hours just to keep a roof & food in supply. Gone are the days where mom stayed home to be with the kids. Providing there ARE two parents. It's usually just a woman trying to do everything by herself with no man in sight. People are different now everyone is too busy looking out for themselves.

You can **** and moan all you want about how things have changed but you aren't going to get anybody to change it, and it probably isn't possible to change it back to what we grew up with. NOTHING ever goes backwards, so just deal with how it is now whether you like it or not.

You want to live in the past, then you better be able to deal with the consequences of that looking backwards mentality impact on what the current situation is!

But as you can see, from that case in HI, todays society can't afford to put todays youth at risk because of your backward mentality.

As far as I'm concerned, the backwards mentality is what I mentioned in my previous post. Nobody is saying to purposely put children in danger for God's sake.

You say parents are too busy working ? Then why have kids then if you can't raise them ? Why are you not asking the proper questions ? One being...why is everything so expensive that requires both parents to work ? Answer that one please. Why do women feel they can do everything on their own with no man ? Is that some badge of honor ? Or single dads for that matter. Granted, sh&t happens in life but I see women purposely wanting to raise kids alone.

Your premise is to ask no questions and go with the flow that others dictate. Sounds like a sheep to me Cathy. Maybe your happy in that role, many others are not.

Given today's job market and diving pay scales, many may not afford kids on two paychecks.
Women do it on their own because too many men aren't there in person or with their wallet.
It's NOT a badge of honor, it's a reality. I've had the luxury of having my wife at home most of
our marriage. And it wasn't easy. It's why I drove old cars, didn't take vacations, and didn't play with
audio gear for 20 years. And I made a pretty good paycheck.

I hear ya...but nobody is asking where's the jobs....good jobs. Nobody is asking why wages have been stagnant for 20 years. I'm not talking about dead beat dads....divorce, I'm talking about women who purposely have kids out of wed lock and desire to raise them on their own. There is a lot of them....a lot. I know personally 6 women with that mentality that they don't need a man, and they set out on purpose to have kids without them. Sperm donors is all they wanted....and a percentage of the guys paycheck. Do that 3 times with 3 different guys and you have a steady income and pretty much don't have to work. That mentality is effed up.

Kudo's to you for doing what you needed to do to be able to have the wife at home. Todays parents don't see the value in that or simply don't want to give up a certain lifestyle to afford to.

We have incorporated into a fear monger society that has been developed by the press and wide spread media that we didn't have back then. Weirdos have always been around. The only thing that has increased is the aggression of the youth needing weapons to fight battles. I will also put some of that blame on how our children are raised now days.

I here "kids" every where using 4-letter words because it is excepted. The problem is children have the same rights as adults. They are not taught to respect, and discipline is a dirty word.

When we were kids we were running around the neighborhood with BB guns, slingshots and pocket knives, yes even at 7-8yrs old. Instead of playing video games all day we road our bikes, built tree houses and played some kind of street ball.

All these out word activities were lessons with your hands, mind, comradery. Kids barely know how to sharpen a pencil now days.

Amen to all that and ditto. Today if you have a pocket knife the police are called, they lock down the school. Adults can no longer discern differences between childish behavior and criminal behavior....so they lean to the side of criminalizing everything a kid does. Lean to the side of trying to treat them as adults instead of kids. God forbid one kid falls down on the playground and gashes his knee.

We HAVE the world we live in today, because we have allowed politicians and policy create a "hands off" society. You punch your neighbor in the chops for dropping an "F" bomb in front of a woman, and your jailed for assault. In the 60's, the cop (if even called) would have said, "maybe you should watch your mouth?" and walked away.

All this talk about "you can't go backwards in time".....I don't buy it for a second. Number 1: I don't consider it going "backwards" I consider it going the right direction. Number 2: History repeats itself, and you will see a return after enough chaos is witnessed as a result of "sidelined" parents.
