Which would you recommend? Looking for a good receiver to replace my current Denon AVR-486. She's old but still working great. What kind of a difference will I see between the old receiver and the new one sound quality wise? I'm torn as to do I upgrade or use the 486 until it dies. Not doing 4K or 3d right now and the 486 doesn't have any hdmi ports so I'm using an optical audio from TV to the reciever

2 Polk Monitor 60 fronts
4 Polk Monitor 40 surrounds
PSW505 Sub

X4000......$1299
SC-75......$1099 on sale at bestbuy

SC-75 all day long. If you ever step up to the RTi or LSi series the power it has will keep up with them. The Denon will fall flat on its face.

Its been mentioned but the models your talking about still are manufactured by Pioneer and would still carry a warranty even if they got bought out.

Also the being 70's you want the extra wattage/current you get from the SC model when all channels are driven. But the Monitors are relatively easy to drive. Step up to the RTi line or any other speaker that really needs wattage and it the Denon just wont do as well.

Save some cash and pick up the Pioneer SC-1523-K (non Elite same as the SC-75, cosmetic differences, less warranty) from Amazon (Authorized dealer) for $799 shipped.

One of the features of the Denon I like is the audyssey that can eq the sub and the speakers where as the MCACC will not do the sub.

Between the 2 we are only talking 10 watts per channel extra. I can get the X4000 for $1010 shipped brand new

True, but there are other things you can buy that will EQ the sub (Antimode 8033, SMS-1) if thats your only hold up.

Also Pioneers stance is that the 63hz and below wavelength is basically impossible to EQ as its longer than most rooms are so thats why they dont apply EQ that low.

I'm also a little worried about the support receivers will get if/when Pioneer sells off their line. Not just from an "if something goes wrong" standpoint but also the standpoint of firmware updates and everything.

Eh... just because its been "mentioned" doesnt mean it will actually happen. Heck Onkyo could sell out to Denon tomorrow for all you know.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

I still plan to buy a Pioneer SC model next year personally. You just cant find a similarly priced AVR with the same feature set AND power for the price. The ONLY other AVR I would consider would be Anthem MRX line but your losing some considerable power and features to go with them.

The calibration programs should only be used to set a base line, the final tuning should be done by you.

Are you referring to the 2 channels driven spec or the 5/7 channels?

That said, another vote for the Pioneer.

As stated by F1 the 2 channel rating is a JOKE. Look at the Denon when all channels are driven and cry when your getting like 25 watts a channel whereas the Pioneer is giving you AS CLOSE to spec as it gets even with ALL CHANNELS driven....

Power costs money. Good power costs lots...

Take Yamaha for instance. They rate the RX-V775 at 110 watts x 2 but when Sound and Vision bench tested it, it only put out 32 watts when 7 channels were driven. The Pioneer, with it's efficient D class amps, does MUCH better with all channels driven than about any other AVR I am aware of.

You don't need Audessey, break out the tape measure and an SPL meter (even an Android or iOS app will get you pretty close) and set it up yourself.

These units don't go through a ton of updates and what ever happens..they will for sure will offer support for units in warranty. IMO, they do a good job with support and parts, etc. So, we will see what happens... But I'm sort of holding out for one of the newer units myself after having three SC units in a short time span. You really need to hear one of these units if you have not. They really wake up the senses and almost fool you into thinking you are running big buck seperates. Without any eq applied the Pioneer just pounds away at the low end and dynamics compared to the Onkyo I'm temporarily using.
