Why won't my DVD-R play in the DVD player?

I recorded a movie from TV on to a DVD-R disc, and it will only play on the DVD player that I recorded it on. Can a DVD+R play in most DVD players? Because I borrowed a DVD+R off someone and it played in a normal DVD player. So do I just need to transfer this DVD-R to a DVD+R or what? PLEASE ANSWER I NEED HELP!!

Did you not finalize the DVD-R on the dvd recorder you used? Til that procedure is done, that DVD-R will probably only play on the dvd recorder that recorded it.
