Part of the load of gear I just brought back from a dear friends house, her late husbands audio treasures, most pretty old.

The first several hits when i looked this cd recorder player up on the intranet discussed the probs it began having after decades of service, so i got nervous, as i was hoping i would keep this, already free of charge to burn cds.

Hooked it up and I am right now listening to JJ Cales "Naturally" is playing, ejecting, stopping and starting flawlessly.

The only prob so far is a cut out remedied by playing with the rca jack on the output on the back of the unit.

Im sure this decades old unit could use a little solder joint touchup here and there, and this free unit might be the perfect one to get back into my soldering practice.

For right now it sounds awfully good, hope the cd burning functions work just as well.

Those are good units, Scotty. Our media director from my church gave me 2 of these Tascam recorders. A 700 and a 750. They record and sound very good.

True, right up until they won't read a disc. Those Tascam models are notorious for leaving you hanging at the most vulnerable time. I had one do just this on Easter Cantata Sunday this past month. They simply refuse to read a disc at random, no rhyme or reason and then work the next week just fine. I have a stack of Tascam 500, and 750s that I've had to replace for this. Thank goodness my Tascam 222 CDR Cassette is still working. I keep waiting for it to die.....

Dennis, I think the same could be said for any machine. Dirty lens, dirty/scratched disc. Fortunately, I haven't had an issue yet.

Sold hundreds of them over the years as they practically owned the rackmount pro audio market. Just had a lot of them, as in dozens, go bad in the same way.....won't read the TOC and read out Disc Error or No Disc. Lots of warranty repairs/replacements until they are out of warranty, then usually sold the church/school Denon pro models. They were more dependable, but they did cost more up front. Funny thing is that the Tascam models seemed more prone to failure than the cheaper Teac versions........go figure.

I agree with all that has been said, It sounded great last night, and the first 10 things that came up when i did a search just typing in the model was about the reading problem.

Not sure if the amount of use has anything to do with this prob, as this one was relegated to a room that was hardly used, and there were many more disc players in other, more frequently used systems in their house.

Its free, so keeping fingers crossed i can record some music for myself and my sister
