Hell Polks,
My receiver has a eq set up for all the connected speakers. There are the low mid high range tuning. However, I need to know what's the right calibration as far as trying to set it to THEATER effects.

Thanks:)

I currently have mine set at the defaults. I've never really had the time to sit down and full with the eq settings. Anyways, mine sounds outstanding as is. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is room for improvement but at the moment, I'm extremely happy with the way mine sounds. Maybe its the acoustics in my H/T room or something. The person to ask would be Doro. He is another Sony fan that know quit a bit about Sony's gear. Give him a chime.

Setting the EQ to flatten out the response for the speakers in your enviroment requires (1) SPL meter(Radioshack),(2) a test disc that will
play test tones from 25Hz to 20KHz, I use Carver's Amazing Bytes Reference CD(3) making a graph of the response, then adjusting with EQ to flatten overall response. (4) time.
This will give you a great starting point then you may adjust to your own taste.
I use a Sony amp and have the same adjustments (parametric type) You really can't truely create a flat response with the limited amount of adjustable frequencies available on the amp, but you can get pretty close. When the speakers are flattened to your room,(sound pressure of available frequencies equal) the sound is amazing and you wish you would have done it long time ago. ps. Keep in mind that is better to subtract than boost frequencies on the EQ. Also that adjusting any fequency or group will affect others. Thats why it takes time and patience.

I like the challenge on this EQ settings. As far as I know, I've set them as close as I like them. However, I am still curious about the proper tuning specs. Thanks for the response:)

    Thank you

Doggie - You don't need to set up the EQ at all, in order to achieve HT effects and soundfields. Its for fine tuning of an enviroment or speaker.

I personally, like Grimster, don't bother with it because it sounds fine as is. Even at default it isn't a flat response per se, that is determined by the speaker, and is actually set per test signals. I think the Sony interface for adjusting EQ is fairly convoluted and a chore to handle adjustments. Rstrine stated some good information also.

If you want to mess around, surely check it out, just write down your factory defaults for later. It is a long process, and you may find some pleasant results, or you may not be able to....and spend a few hours or even days with a pain in your stomach. :D

Your advises are noted, it seems that I need a day or two to tweak the EQ to meet my standard. Much love to you all. PEace.:)

What are the suggested defaults for the Polk RM7200 system for the midrange and the high? I am told the Bass is 100Hz. I also have a Sony. Any 'start' suggestions woul be helpful.

    SONY EQ DEFAULTS

    Front Bass 250hz
    Front Mid 1.0khz
    Front Treble 2.5khz
    Center Bass 250hz
    Center Mid 1.0khz
    Center Treble 2.5khz
    Surround Bass 250hz
    Surround Treble 2.5khz
    Surround Back Bass 250hz
    Surround Back Treble 2.5khz

I do not use the EQ, only the factory defaults. Don't confuse the EQ with your settings for HT. I set my speakers to small, and cut at 80 across the board for HT.

My bad qjb0607. In your receiver settings what Doro is telling you is to set your crossover frequencies all to 80hz. I'm pretty sure mine are all set to 80hz across the board (fronts, center, side and rears) other than my LFE which I beleive is set at 120hz. Hope this helps.

I thought the settings that Doro had previously sent were the adjustments for the speaker settings on my Sony. My LFE (Bass) setting only goes down to 100Hz. I do have the speakers set to SMALL. Unless I misunderstand all this, the crossover settings on the Sony receiver are to establish what frequencies go to what speakers. So if the range of the tweeter. let's say, is 2500 Hz to 20,000 Hz, then the setting on the Sony would be at 2500 Hz. No? Maybe I am getting too basic for the forum. If so, let me know. I don't want to waste time and space.

Okay, after reading the whole thread I see how I've confused you. On your receiver, by the way, what model are you running, you have your EQ settings which is what Doro gave you the defaults of, then you have your bass management settings, which, if I'm not mistaken, you have to go to your setup menu. As far as the EQ settings go, I would leave them as default as Doro stated. Under your bass management, set all your settings to 80hz. I hope this helps a little more. Sony has probally the most extensive settings menus or the market in my opinion so I can understand how its so easy to get confused. My only hope is that I'm not way off track here and if so, let me know.

Sony STRDE 935 Receiver. Unless I am missing something, the bass managament will only go down to 100Hz whether front, center, rear. Then there are adjustments for midrange and High, both frequency and volume. I did some adjustments using AVIA test disk for balance and level, using 75 db on my SPL meter, and the pink noise as the reference tone. But when it comes to the individual crossover settings, must I do a frequency run to know where to set the mid and high absed on room accoustics, or is there a 'default' based upon the frequency responses of the individual RM3300 speakers (RM7200 front, center, and rears).

    Thanks for your patience.

Grim - You are on track. ;)

Q - I would set all your defaults for the EQ as stated previously. The HT portion for bass management and settings for speaker size are totally independent of the EQ function. The EQ is only used when selected, and affects the entire spectrum. The HT settings, which are your most crucial, are fairly simple and easy to set.

    EQ
Press EQ, in the setup area, and make sure the values are all at the aforementioned defaults. Most of the older Sony line uses a button for EQ, yours may differ, but I recall it being present. There may be two buttons labeled "EQ" one is for EQ settings, one is for EQ on/off.

The newer non-ES line, DE595-995 drops the EQ button, in lieu of buttons or another jog shuttle knob.

Feel free to mess with the EQ later, but you should start with the proper settings for the HT portion.

    HT
These are my suggestions for your Sony:
    80hz/0db across the board
    Speakers - Small

How do you have your subwoofer connected? RCA or Speaker Wire?

    RCA
    Subwoofer - Yes
LFE Mix Level - (neg) -3.0db

    Speaker Wire
    Subwoofer - No
LFE Mix Level - Will still be available, but is not useable.

Your actual subwoofer limits may be less adjustable then the ES series. The 100hz limit may in fact be your lowest limit.

That was just real quick, let us know if you need some more help.

Thanks for all you help. I set the EQ as suggested. I do not see any setting however for the 80 Hz for HT.
