A friend of mine asked me this question and I really didn't know what was correct answer was. Learning here wire is not just wire. He said he had some marine grade wire and also car wire from his marine auto audio installer days could these types of wire be used as standard speaker wire. he said gauges were 12 or 14. I told him I'd ask people in the know but I said you'd might be better off just using standard 12/14 gu spkr wire and call it a day. I know he doesn't want to waist what he has but is harmful in anyway. Marine code wire can be a bear to work w/ because of anti salt teflon coated jacket(or what ever it's covered with). Beyond that I just don't know.

You could use coat hangers if you wanted. Some people use orange power cord cable from Home Depot and yet others use low voltage lighting cable. So yeah, his marine grade cable could be used and if he is using consumer grade gear it'll do an ok job.

That's pretty much what I thought. As told before he would be better off using real standard speaker wire. I'll print this and let him know.

In the past, I sometimes used 'Ancor Marine Products' wires and cables in home audio systems. But now the price of anything marked 'marine' is through the roof.

I don't know about the fire ratings (but any fire in a boat is a real big deal).
