Neighbors want to have an "Outdoor Movie Night"

This Saturday they want to put up a big projection screen with a projector in one of the neighbor's driveways or something and show a movie outside.

Hey, I'm all for it, sounds like fun!

Then they showed me the AV equipment.

I was disappointed.

The projector is nice enough. A Panasonic unit. Dunno the model number but the picture was pretty frickin' good. The sound though? A Bose Wave radio.

This cannot stand.

So I asked them if they wanted a decent stereo. They asked "Why? Do you just have one laying around doing nothing?"

I said "Yea...why?" (I actually have enough for 4 complete stereos or 3 complete stereos and a 5.1 channel surround sound setup with a spare sub)

They looked at me weird.

So in lieu of having to bring a dessert or something, I will provide a pair of KEF iQ9's and an old Polk Audio C4 car sub. The KEF's will be handled by a NAD C370 integrated and the C4 will be powered by a NAD 902 amp. It might shake da earf but since it'll be outside, I doubt it. It'll have a hell of a bunch more impact than a Bose Wave radio too.

    LOL...

I have been talking with my wife that once I get everything dialed in, when that special movie comes out, I want to do a Opening Night type deal at my house with my system. Invite a bunch of family/friends over for food. Get a red carpet, popcorn machine, and depending on things, even grill out dinner.

Figure it would be a really fun "Extended Family" night (and give me an excuse to REALLY crank it).

We use to do this on my cousin's 2 story white house, then someone got the idea to do this on our canoe trip in Arkansas which was a yearly planned trip.

so we took a Huge sheet that was strung between 2 tree's and a projector and sound system run on a portable generator, and we watched "Deliverance" that night before we hit the river LOL, people from all the other camp sites came over and joined us :)

One of the local's from Arkansas came over and said in his crazy accent "YOU BOY'S JUST AIN'T RIGHT"

I took my family camping at a KOA park with an large group and someone did this on the side of one of the cabins...was cool for the kids.

Good you are giving them something better soundwise. I'm sure you know this but regular speakers really drop off in volume at distance. The Kef's off axis response should help out a bit. If this is going to be a really large and deep group....get the speakers up high to help with projection. Four milk crates per side with weights and a board can make for nice platforms.

I do this all the time too.

My friend has the video projector. He does video gigs professionally. And I have a Fast-Fold 7.5 by 10 foot screen. With both screen types. We generally use the rear projection screen.
For audio I have 8 JBL Eon 515 full range powered PA speakers and stands. Along with 2 Eon 518 18" powered subs.
So we have surround sound and plenty of thump.

My test BluRay is Top Gun. It's funny how good it sounds with five thousand watts of audio in the back yard.

Yeah, if they want to do this in front of a garage door then it's not going to be totally open space. There will be reflections off of th garage door and such.

I think the screen is free-standing too so we could actually open the garage door and put the speakers in the garage and use the "enclosure loading" the garage itself would provide to boost output.

If it was going to be in an open yard, they'd need a few hundred watts per channel and some cone area. I think the KEF's with the NAD amp will be fine. The KEFs are pretty sensitive and a C370 puts out about 120W per channel with peak values over 200W. The KEFs get to painful levels in a large room pretty easily with that NAD. They should be able to perform well enough in a driveway backed up against a garage door. Especially if I have the C4 helping out on the bottom end. It's actually an iso-baric bandpass sub with 4 drivers in it. I had complaints from neighbors at the apartment complex I lived in when powering the sub with the NAD 902.

The sub is rated at 4 ohms in stereo and the NAD puts out like 50-55 watts at 4 ohms. If it's not enough, the ADCOM GFA-535II I have will push 100 watts per channel through it at 4 ohms. Either way, there will b plenty of oomph for such an efficient enclosure. Polk said peak power handling was 200 watts per channel and it is a stereo sub.

I've take a box of parts to the cabin in the past and setup a projector, amplified AR speakers, and an AppleTV. Works well. I also want to have an outdoor movie night and considered the garage door for the screen... but it's not a flat white door. What ideas do you have for a large temporary screen for use in the back yard?

    Cool idea
