I canceled my cable, except for the basic over the air channels, so I could not watch the San Jose Sharks humiliate themselves in the playoffs. I had to find my Parasound tuner, hook it up to input 3 on my Pass XP-20 preamp, and listen to them humiliate themselves.

Anyway, since I never listen to the radio, I just removed it from my system. Since the Pass does not have a power switch, I let it continue playing music on input 1. I powered off the tuner, removed the power cord, left the cables attached to the tuner, and removed the cables from input 3. Then I slowly pulled the tuner out from the rack so that the cables would not snag anything. As soon as I moved it the music stopped. WTF!!!

The pre is still on, but no music. I removed and reinserted the pre's power cord since that is the only was to reset the Pass. No help. I switched inputs back and forth but nothing from input 1. Now I am perturbed. I can't believe unplugging dead cables would break the pre, but that seems to be the case. I went to verify input 2 with the CDP, but realized the power cord is being used elsewhere. I went back to input 1 hoping that it fixed itself, and then for grins, changed the DAC input to another and then back to the file player input, and the music started. WTF!, but a good WTF. I'm not sure whether the DAC or the pre is the villain in this case, but am very glad everything is okay.

Fortunately, I have spares for both, but getting broken gear fixed is a pain.

Fox...you should know this. Removing cables from anything powered on will result in a good chance of a headache. You should have unplugged the pre bro.

You might just have to send that pre to me so I can listen and make sure it's ok...lol

Yes. It just surprised me that nothing happened until I started to pull the cables out the front of the rack. I don't think they were touching any other cables, and the tuner was turned off and unplugged. Plus the DAC is on the shelf above the pre, so no contact there. All in all, a very strange incident. Fortunately, it happened before I had any beer. This weird stuff usually happens late at night after a few beers.

For example, last week, early Saturday morning, I was just blasting the music. The meter on each amp was bouncing all over the right side. Believe me, to see that takes a lot of current/volume. Anyway, the breaker on the amps circuit tripped, but none of the breakers indicated being tripped, so I had to cycle a few to get the right one (time to re-label the breakers). Then the right amp didn't seem to power on, so I went to bed. Got up later, and everything is fine. Monday I get another 20 amp circuit, one for each amp. There better not be any more issues after that. Of course, if the breaker hadn't tripped the police probably would have showed up, so it might have been a good thing.

Yo, your EARS are NOT getting any younger so I'd keep those Dbs below 85 or maybe 90!

If you're tripping breakers that can't be good for you.

This is true. However, a occasional brief trip into the danger zone should be okay. Especially when there isn't any distortion, just incredibly loud music.
