I had a lady contact me and tell me she had some reel to reel tapes for sale in regards to an ad I had posted on CL
Hi,
I see you are looking for older reel to reel tapes. Im finally going to sell my music collection.
3-unopened blank audiotape
jimi hendrix live at the monterey pop festival
james gang straight shooter
bob dylan's greatest hits
cat stevens teaser and the firecat
rolling stones sticky fingers
18 in total including blank tapes
I told her I would buy them and then asked her if she had anything else audio related, well it turns out she worked for a local music store back in the 80's and had amassed a record collection during this time a total of 791 LP's and 4 box sets all of these are still brand new in shrink wrap. She also says she has a very nice stereo system made up of separate components with original boxes no details as to what they may be yet.
I guess my question here is two fold. Is there any bands or albums in particular that I should look for that were made during this time period? and what would you offer on these as a lot?
I of course do not want to get stuck with 795 disco albums or the like but if there is a good mix of genres what would it be worth to you?

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all

I am hoping though that given her reason for collecting them she made wise decisions regarding value. She told me she bought them when she worked there as an investment so this statement and the fact that they are all still new gives me hope that she bought only the choicest most rare desirable albums.

She also has to decide rather or not she wants to put the effort in piecing out or selling in lump sum, but I would pass up the chance to take a look.

Share some of that wealth with your fellow Polkies Snow! If there are duplicates with classic Rock LP's PLEASE consider selling me some.

That does seem to be the case yes. I am hopeful considering the titles of the R2R tapes that most will be classic rock albums though.
REGARDS SNOW
My understanding with R2R tapes is they tend to be somewhat more susceptible to damage over time from environmental effects/degradation than LP's, but if they are in GREAT shape they are superior to any other format. If they are bad however, they are essentially useless.
Good luck with your deal, and stay thirsty my friend. The Gear... You'll really need to get a look first to determine value. But, whatever you do, get her to throw out the first number. I came across a similar situation a few months back. Went to buy a pair of speakers, and asked the guy if he had any other audio related things he wanted gone. Hauls out a box of 70ish classic rock LPs, nothing super rare or valuable, but all good stuff, mint, & mostly albums I didn't already have. I'm thinking I'd pay $2-3 a record if it comes down to it, but asked him what he wanted before he could ask what I'd pay. He throws out a number that's less than $ .50 a record. If he stayed outside after I drove off he probably heard the WoooHooo! I let out a few blocks away.

x2! Never bought a collection but in my area and my experience there are more junk in them then good stuff.HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.

I agree guessing from the R2R titles its probably not left-over disco crap. Sealed original LPs can bring some real good ying sometimes, I have a buddy who deals alot in sealed vinyl but mostly from the '60's and '70's (which makes you wonder how there could be enough people who kept LPs from the 60's and never opened them, I realize there may be some people like this lady who worked in a record store in the 80's and kept them as an investment because you could see vinyl "dying" at that point maybe, but I was a record reviewer in the 70's that got a lot of LPs and I could rarely resist opening them, and lots of guys who had R2R would play them once to record them to keep them pristine but to buy them and keep them sealed ....)

Man that's hard to say until you see the selection and shape of the records. I had a similar situation come up a few years ago. I was doing some work on the GA/FL border and found an add on the Jacksonville Craigslist for a Project 1.2 table with an Ortofon OM-30 cart, ring-mat, clamp, and all of the associated cleaning gear and supplies. I met with the guy and bought the table and all the other gear. After I bought that he asked me if I was interested in buying his vinyl collection. He had around 1,000 rock, metal, jazz, folk, and a little classical (all of which I listen to) lPs and audiophile large 45s that were anywhere from good to mint shape. It turns out he was moving from Jacksonville to Portland Oregon and all he was taking was his dog, clothes, and car. I offered him $300 for the whole lot and he did not hesitate on the offer. When I moved from that area a few years later, I didn't have the time and space to take them with me. I sold most of them to Ted (Reel Trouble 1) here on the board. I sure do wish I had most of those now!

Wow, man, that sounds pretty cool. I hope you end up with an awesome score, here's sending some good karma your way.
