After about 5 months of owning them, I am really liking these JBL Studio 230 bookshelf speakers. Though they have a lower msrp than the Studio L830's (and not as good a build quality, though still pretty good) that I once owned, I think they sound better than them. I have read where others feel the same. JBL used waveguide technology from the M2 in the design on this series, with excellent results IMHO. The 6-1/2" woofers have JBL'S proprietary Polyplass cones, though this series has stamped steel frames instead of the cast frames the 830's have and I like to see. Interestingly, JBL/Harman decided to abandon the titanium dome tweeters that they are known for in this series for the CMMD material used in their Infinity brand speakers. They may "look" like they would be bright sounding, but to my ears they sound very detailed but not harsh at all. They match very well with my Marantz PM6005, but could possibly sound bright with the wrong pairing. Either way, they are not as bright and are more musical sounding than either the Klipsch RB-61 or Polk RTi6 (I have owned both) that are in the same price range. I think the JBL'S are a great sounding speaker for the money when on sale (I paid $299 for mine), instead of their usual $399.
Anyhow, sorry for rambling. I have been drinking coffee and have a caffeine buzz, and I'm enjoying the music for a while longer.
Thanks for the info. Read their review in S&V and they seemed pretty impressed with them as well. Seems like it would be a good dual purpose speaker for not a lot of money. -
