@BlueMDPicker how is it and how did you get it early?
Personally, I don't like the mix on most cuts. I waited until I could sit down and critically listen to it all the way through again. There is a rarely relenting, driven drum beat at the center of the soundstage that, to me, becomes fatiguing by track 4 "No Good Place For the Lonely". It backs off a bit on start of track 5 (the title track) but comes roaring back with a vengeance. Track 6, "The Valley Runs Low" is a welcome change with its acoustic guitar and female backup vocals. The pick of the litter for my tastes, "You Left Me Nothin' But the Blues and the Bill", is classic JB blues at its best and should, IMHO, get the most air play (although his last utterance will be censored). Track 8, "Distant Lonesome Train" is fast paced and, at last, the perfect canvas for this drum-centric mix. It has a heavy nod to Jimi's influence in Joe's superbly original guitar style. "How Deep This River Runs" has a great vibe, but goes too drum heavy towards the middle. Joe's vocals reel it back in at the end, saving the day. "Livin' Easy" is a very well done throwback to the pre-electric blues and is the best engineered on the album."What I've Known For A Very Long Time" is a slow, T-Bone Walker styled, blues that wraps it up (with the drums in check) and has a good horn arrangement.
So, there you have my assessment. YMMV. I'd be interested in your review once you've had a chance to give it a listen.
I have a friend in the entertainment industry who, very rarely, gifts me a demo/review copy of something he knows I'll really enjoy. -
