Room treatments

I need to do room treatments. I have a small room with big speakers. I have changed equipment so much over the last few years and the only thing I havent done is room treatments. Is there any web sites that help explain where to put them or to help figure out where might be the better placement to put treatments? Before I just go throwing stuff around the room, I would like to educate myself on what I am doing or get a plan of attack.

A lot of good info on GIK's website, but I'm not a big fan of their website's layout/design.

I always thought RealTraps have very fine products and a great site with plenty of info.

Using a mic to measure response at the LP is a good way to measure what room treatments are doing in your room.
Realtraps and GIK are good places to start on how to treat you rrooms. Give GIK or Realtraps a call if you want to talk over room acoustics with them. Some good rules of thumbs to start out is to treat the first reflection points on the front and side walls with thin OC703/705 and bass trap the corners. You never can have too much bass trapping.2Ch Tube Audio Convert -

+1 on this recommendation. I'm working with GIK right now and have been very pleased with the company, support and results. I recommend the mic and REW for validating both location of speakers and MLP and to see what the treatments are doing. You can also send them the mdat file and your room layout for assistance._____________________________________________________________________________________________

Love my GIK's, changed everything, and was what I needed for my 1.2tl's..

I'm another GIK customer that is more than happy with their customer service and product quality. I still have more to do, but what I have done has made a huge difference. Should be a mod everyone makes.Main

Given your location also check out ATC Acoustics... they are based in Southern IL, so you may be able to pickup the panels and save cost on shipping if your getting a bunch, or thicker bass panels...

Looks like I will be dong some room flipping this weekend. I will do some back streches to get ready to move the 110 lb McBeast LOL.
From Bryan:
"My gut just looking at it says put the speakers on what is now you’re your left wall and have the seat along the wall with the shutters. Kind of chops up the entry from the garage but that’s the best starting point. Try the chair about 4’ from the wall behind you. yes, it’s nearfield but that’s what will work in this room. 8’ ceilings are notorious for problems around 70hz which can make things sound thin. 2 244 overhead will address that.
Nearfield will put you closer to the speakers and farther from the boundary. That yields a 6db difference in direct vs reflected sound and gets you away from the boundary where everything is sloppy and muddy.
The way you are set up now, just not gonna work. One speaker corner loaded, the other hanging out in free space with no side wall gain – you’ll never get tonal balance or imaging – sorry.
Smaller speakers and a sub tend to work better in rooms like this so the monitors have more freedom of placement for best response and imaging and the bass can be gotten where it sounds best. Just set up the mains first and get things dialed in for imaging and best response possible kind of ignoring 80Hz and down. Then we’ll bring the sub into the mix."

Correct from GIK. Their approach of getting the placement closer to right then lets figure out treatments instead of just selling me something that might not work in my current setup is a testament to their customer service without even purchasing anything yet! They could have just said buy this and that and I would have. Having this kind of customer service and not just worried about taking your money and good luck figureing it out is beyond refreshing.
I can see why people have sent me to them. I would recommend them anyday of the week and I havent even bought anything yet.
Remember I said the MMM1 sounded thin to me, now I know why! I never even mentioned anything sounding thin to him.Klipsch The Nines, Audioquest Thunderbird Interconnect, Innuos Zen MK3 W4S recovery, Revolution Audio Labs USB & Ethernet, Border Patrol SE-I, Audioquest Niagara 5000 & Thunder, Cullen Crossover II PC's. -
GIK is tops in my book. IIRC had their stuff since 2006. For those who may not know they have a forum at Audio Circle.

Ernie, I also had Bryan help me. You're experience sounds pretty similar to mine. Optimize the speaker location, MLP and room first. I really enjoyed the experience and Bryan was patient and answered all of my million questions. It felt more like a partnership looking for great sound than just being a customer buying products. The final result was fantastic and significantly made a difference in my audio enjoyment. Good luck in your journeys.
Mike
