Hey all. For the first time, my Sony AVR when powered on is making a what I think is electrical noise...a sort of humming sound. It might of done that all along, but its the first time ive noticed it. Its not loud at all, but I can hear it. It this a bad sign?? Its almost like the sound the old CRT TVs make when they are turned on if that helps...
My Setup: Denon AVR X3600h, Polk Signature S50 Fronts w/ S30 Center and S15 Rears, LG UBK90 4K Player, TCL 6-Series 65”4k TV

Sounds like a transformer hum. Probably not a big deal, they can hum if there is DC on the mains, or possibly a loose winding. It may get louder if voltage drops, when you turn on your TV for example.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Oh I see. Can that be fixed?? Will a surge protector with power filtration help any?? What is meant by DC on the mains??

Mains DC can be blocked, if that indeed is the problem. Certain devices like light dimmers, fan speed controls, temperature controls, etc. load the AC power line asymmetrically (i.e., on only 1/2 of the AC cycle) and this superimposes direct current (DC) on the power lines. This DC causes the core of a transformer to saturate, and in an attempt to recover, the transformer buzzes or hums audibly.

Prevention is better than cure. It is easier to eliminate the cause versus applying a remedy. Look around the home for any devices like those mentioned above that may be generating DC and turn them off. Halogen lights, fans, light dimmers, hairdryer and curling iron temperature controls, etc. are all potential causes. Sometimes the DC can come from outside your home, like from a neighbor whose home is on the same power company transformer.

When you can't turn a source of DC off at the source, you can try a DC blocker. The only company I know of at this time currently making filters that claim to eliminate power line DC is Emotiva. I have custom built several DC blockers for Audiogon Forum members since post #23 in the following thread:

I didn't realize all that can affect my equipment. What's interesting is that my other AVR is not making this noise...actually the Sony is the only device making this noise.. And I currently have my equipment surge protected and power filtered. Because of this, I'm thinking its the power supply of the Sony...or something within the Sony.

It is Sony STR DH-510. I use it only for music...its my 2ch music setup. Is it worth fixing if it needs fixed? I know that BB has the str dh130 stereo receiver on sale for a little over 100. Would that be a good replacement? Again, it'll be for music only.

I wouldn't even worry about it, unless it gets loud enough that it becomes very noticeable. Run it till she blows. Then replace it, it isn't worth fixing.
