Jolida CDP took a hit today?

Hi,

My Jolida CDP was hit by a falling hardback book that caught it on the front top plate from about a foot or two. I was moving stuff around. The player is fine, plays fine. All functions work. But it's doing something a little out of the ordinary when I try to open and close it. Does not matter whether I use the remote or face buttons on the unit. It opens for around 2 seconds and closes on its own which it NEVER did before? Otherwise when it closes it loads the CD and plays it fine, repeat works, skip works, stop works no problem. Everything sounds fine.

What did I do? Have I jarred some kind of belt and should I look into it? Will this lead to further problems if not addressed?

Thanks guys!

Are you sure it's opening completely? Sounds like it's not quite getting all the way open, so it closes itself.

Hmmm. I thought it was since it stays there long enough to take a CD out and put another one in. But I'll check that, because that may be true?

You're right. When I yank on it, it clicks into place then stays open as it should. But when I close it and open it again, it does not extend fully and goes into its auto-closing mode again. Obviously something is not seated properly? But what is it?

What's wrong? I really don't know. Time to get out the tools and open it up and take a good close look.sounds like something is slightly misaligned.

Do you know what brand/model transport your Jolida uses? If not, you can remove the top and look on the transport itself for that info.

Can you see if when the book feel on the face plate if it dropped the face plate slightly and put the drive mechanism in a bind when trying to open.

I'll probably open it up tomorrow. But it is my understanding that it uses a Philips L1210/S transport?

However a seller on Audiogon says this has a Philips CDM 12 Drive. This is not an area I know that much about so I'll pop the hood tomorrow.

It is an L1210/S as reported on the site:

That's hard to see. And the aluminum face plate has got to be a 1/4" thick on these, they have a tank-like casing! But who knows, I'll be able to see better in the morning. Not enough light in this room now.

    Thanks to everyone.

    Philips L1210/s / VAM1202/19

The first is the loader model number, the second is the optical pickup assembly. IIRC the JD100 used the same loader, but it used a different assembly, the VAM1202/12. Anyway, the tray moves via a rack and pinion type arrangement. The problem is related to that area, but without seeing it I'm not sure exactly what. I've worked on the JD100 transport before, it's a rather simple affair.

    Thanks Jesse,

I took off the top and worked the plastic slider by hand looking for any obstruction or something out of alignment. Couldn't see anything. So I decided to fire it up without the top plate on and open and close it with the remote a few times.

No problem, opened, stayed open till I sent the close command. I did notice a tiny tiny ding on the lower right corner of the front plate door? Not sure if that was there originally. I also noticed when I undid the center screw which is over the CD door that there was some pressure relief as though the screw might have been "bending" that part of the plate it was **** into. It seems as though zane77 may have been correct here, there is something that happened to cause some excess friction on the loading mechanism that does not allow it to fully extend. The question now is first to let the top plate sit without screws and load a CD again to see if we're OK or not. Then if that works, put all the screws back in except for that one and try again. Then check to see what can be done about relieving the pressure from the center screw, if, indeed, that is the problem.

Yes. Forgot to get back. Looks like the unit took a hit it didn't like but that it did NOT affect the loader.

I put the top back on, everything was fine. I screwed in 7 of the 8 screws tightly, fine. I put the 8th screw that is just over the CD tray opening back in without **** it in to the MAX. All was fine. I suspect if I try and take the screw to its limits, fully secured, that will return my problem to me--it's screwed in but not as tightly as it could be. Looks like the top plate took the hit and caused the screw to pull up too much so that the tray was rubbing on the way out, just a smidge. Tight tolerances here!

I suppose putting some kind of very very thin padding somewhere above below the screw might be OK?

In any case, it's not the loader. And I'm breathing a lot easier, today. Thanks.

It wouldn't take much to mess with the movement of a loader. Anyway, looks like you found the problem.

Thanks to everyone. We'll stick with what's working for now and keep the fingers crossed! I was a little surprised at how flimsy the plastic that loads the CD actually is. But as I understand it, this is a fairly common Philips unit found in fairly decent players.

All I know is that (most) CDs sound so much better on a good tube stage player, at least that's what my "ears" tell me.

Glad ya got it working Cnh. I had a Sony es & it was acting up. I would turn it on-open draw & when it got to end-it stayed & nothing.. I could press open & 3/4 of the way out i would press close & it worked. This would do this 5-6 times. Then all of sudden it seems as it warmed up,it worked fine.... Shut it off & the next day the darn thing would do it the same way. I took it apart & looked it over & lubed tray area & it seemed as though every thing was in order. When i put it back together i snugged up the screws lightly & it worked fine. I used it to record cd to tape for years & recently i got rid of it & im sure it will go for years to come. The Sony wasnt a high end player like your Jolida but they are built pretty tough. I hope yours does the same :)
