is it possible to be able to use the tuner only on this receiver? if so, how would I connect it to my preamp? thanks.

Sure -- well, it should be, at any rate! :-)

Use its tape out jacks to feed any line level input (TUNER, AUX, CD player, TAPE PLAY, etc.) on a preamp, integrated amp, or receiver. Just to be on the safe side, set the hk's volume to zero and or turn the speaker selector (if so equipped, I forget) to off. If you really want to be extra-safe, add a pair of "dummy load" noninductive 8 ohm power resistors (10 or 20 watts is overkill in this situation) to the speaker output terminals... but just turning the volume to zero and/or turning the speaker selector off should ensure that no harm will befall the hk's output section.

EDIT: Oh, and set the hk's source selector to the tuner, of course! :-)

I just checked hk's website and they do not, unfortunately, have the Five Twenty manual online. The advice above is strictly generic, but it ought to be straightforward to apply to that fairly early solid state hk receiver.

FWIW, here is das Ding an sich from a Lafayette Radio Electronics (LRE) catalog, ca. 1969.

... and, while we're on the subject of "early hk solid state receivers" :-) here's the original line-up of solid state hk recerivers, from the 1966 LRE catalog.

Note that the power claims predate the 1974 FTC regulations on power output specifications for home stereo hifi equipment -- so any power figure not referred to as "continuous" or "RMS" is, shall we say... optimistic. ;-)

Is he referring the AVR520 from 10 years ago? That model has a full set of surround preouts.

I was being facetious -- us old guys struggle with new-fangled hifi concepts such as AVRs, transistors, 8 track tapes...

I've seen this device... that can capture radiation... right out of the air... and turn it into music. Astonishing. I think they call it... radio.

    :-P
