My bro -in law just gave me a set of KLH 331s. Yes I already know that these are not vintage Kloss era anything but are they lets say comparible w/ my JBL 2060 bookies. I have not hooked these up yet and not to insult him I took them. They are in great shape for a vinyl wrapped type of speaker and just a hair bigger than the JBLs. Any of you guys hear these and are they worthy of keeping?

That generation of KLH speakers was actually pretty good - some of them (perhaps the 331, too) have the same Peerless silk dome tweeter originally used by Polk Audio in the original "Monitor Series" speakers. Those KLH speakers, if memory serves, originally had green foam surrounds on the woofers, too :-)

You can (probably) find some info on them at www.classicspeakerpages.net and/or its forum (FYI).

Well doc as usual your right again. These in fact do have the green foam surrounds and are in great shape. Playing an A/B test these clearly bettered the JBL 2060s and they are still relagated to the bdrm but liking the Nikko much better than the Sony. So I until something else pops up I will keep the KLH in the living room amonst it's much bigger bretheren. I still have 2 open slots on the Niles spkr selector. lol lol

    ;-)

I re-surrounded a similar pair (I think they were 333s) for a one-time co-worker back in MA some years back. Iwas pretty favorably impressed with the results.

One quick thought, I now have 2 sets of the famous east coast sound. The ADC 303ax I believe beat the KLH331s in the bass dept w/ the cloth doped surround and what appears to be a much tighter real walnut wood cabinet (both being non ported 2-ways). Now if I had had a set of Advents then the fun would really start. I left out AR3a because I always held them to a higher standard and which you see now w/ the crazy prices for a nice set. For any disbelievers I went through all my sets and knowing the 2Bs would kill I discounted them but against all the others they are right up there w/ volume applied and 0 distortion heard.

I have found it best to keep an open mind and open ears and to listen to a new-to-me pair of speakers whenever the opportunity presents itself... it is interesting to read folks' opinions about things but nothing beats ears-on evaluation ;-)
