pbs special on the dave clark five

I just peeked in on the second hour, a little before my time, but its amazing the celebs who are adding comments,Gene Simmons, Paul Mccartney, Elton John,Ozzy ns Sharon osbourne,Tom Hanks,Stevie wonder, just in the few minutes i have watched,I just never knew they were that big for a few years.
They also played a few seconds of their version of "Put a little love in your heart", it really sounds good, most of what i have heard displays some pretty damn good musicianship for a pop group of that time, although, again, im not a fan of that eras music other than some of the big names.
it will be reshown starting tomorrow, and other days.
BTW, to give an idea of how the biz was back then, they recorded 13 albums in 4 years, and apparently dave clark was way ahead of most other pop stars he owned the rights to all their masters, and bought the rights to a show called Ready, Steady, Go, a big show in the uk, that actually broke the dc5.
They sold 100 million albums, and had 30 high chartin singles, fascinating.

i caught some of it..really interesting..i had them confused with hermans hermits, but dc5 had real chops

DC5 totally rocked. When they first hit big in the US, "Glad All Over" knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts. The press created a competition between the two groups, which I don't think really existed.
They like alot of British groups of that era loved american soul music. Their covers of "Do You Love Me", "I Like It Like That", and others were great. Lots of folks have knocked their musicianship over the years, but to me they were excellent on their instruments. I really liked DC's style on the drums, Rick was a kickin' bass player, Mike Smith played tasteful keys.

I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show. They did Glad All Over. In a recent estate score, there was a DC5 album. I might have to spin it.

It was really good, lots of stuff I never knew. Dave Clark wrote, or co-wrote with Mike Smith most of their hits. He was also a self taught musician and a visionary to boot. For anyone who missed this and/or would like a hard copy, PBS is releasing it on blu-ray next Tuesday, May 13th. At $30 out of the gate, I wouldn't expect it to be a big seller though...

While DC5 does fall into the category of "Pop", it doesn't go butt deep to where it hits the "Popsy" mark (1910 Fruitgum Company, "Yummy Yummy Yummy" anyone ?).
It's good "Pop": good musicianship, good tunes, good harmonizing.
That's one of the things about groups back then like DC5, they had songs you'd hum along or sing to.

Didn't see the special, but the DC5 were huge for a time. If you're too young you weren't there and wouldn't know, because it came and went. That was true of any number of bands around that time.
I do remember liking a number of their tunes.

Good points, i always thought they were just sorta lightweight poppy kinda stuff.
Hell none other than bruce springsteen and little stevie were right there talkin about how hard hitting they were.
Bruce even said they were harder hitting than the beatles or "The Rolling Stones" for cryin out loud, and they, more than any band, were the model for what he wanted, and got in a band of his own.
Their hits were pretty much popish on vinyl, but the footage from their live shows clearly demonstrated their power and what it did to the audiences who usually wnt nuts, and not just in the typical screaming teen girls who just needed cute guys to scream for.
The range of big names who praised these guys was amazing.humpty dumpty was pushed
