Hey everyone. I just purchased a new set of Polk Monitor 60 front's, CS2 Center, and 4 Monitor 40's for the surrounds. I have an old old old reciever (doesn't even have HDMI) and I am looking to upgrade. I need recommendations for recievers. I'm trying to keep the price under $900 but the best bang for the buck also. I saw newegg had a Yamaha RX-V775WA on sale right now for $450 and my quesiton is that a good reciever or should I look elsewhere?

I need something either 7.1 or 7.2 with network capability and I'd prefer something with at least DLNA (airplay is a plus). With enough power to drive these speakers.

Thank You

I think the sale price on the Onkyo 818 would be hard to beat. It is a very good receiver. Newegg has it 46% off list.

The Pioneer SC-1323-k is probably the best receiver in your price range, but might be overkill for those speakers.

How does it best the Onkyo I mentioned?

Keep in mind the 818 at A4L is a refurb...$50 more for new at Newegg. Also, these used units on Amazon are nice buys also:

ICE amps. Onkyo's reliability has been spotty in recent years. In general I like Onkyo but wouldn't buy one myself.

I recommend an older Pioneer Elite series if you can find one SC series..
I've always preferred those to the newer Yamaha's or Denons, never really liked Onkyo to much..

I think Onkyo is out due to heat issues that have been brough up. This isn't in an open rack it's in a TV shelf. Right now looking 775 or Denon X4000 but I will explore the other options also.

I guess what I was getting at is the 775 such a good price I should jump on it now (limited option) or should I wait and get something else?

Fyi Onkyo hasn't had widespread heat related HDMI failures since the 2010 models. That problem has long been solved. If I were to purchase any receiver today under $1000 it would be the Onkyo. The 818 offers fantastic sound quality due a heavy ClassA/B amplifier and isolated power supplies for the pre-amp and main amp sections. Not to mention the the highest version of audyssey available in an avr. It weighs in a over 40lbs, ten pounds heavier than the mentioned Pioneer. I do agree the heat issues that plagued Onkyo for several years were very real and I understand the concern. However, at this point I think you would be missing an opportunity to own one of the finest avr's under a grand at very cheap price. When I purchased my 717 last year the 818 was out of my budget at $1200, otherwise it would have been hands down my choice.

Of course this is only my take on it. The other brands make fine products as well. Enjoy!

I would suggest contacting JD at:

    AV Science Sales 585-645-1006
    jd@avscience.com

They are an AD for a lot of the brands you are looking at.

I placed an order with him on Friday for an X4000 and showed up at my door today. A very knowledgeable and reasonable individual. Not too mention no sales tax and shipping was cheap.

I think for the time being I'm jus going to hold off. I'm liking the Denon X4000 but the price is up there. I think I need to do more research before I buy a receiver it's been too long since I have shopped for them the features have changed. What kind of wattage should I be looking for per channel?

I like the Pioneer ICE amps as well but Onkyos are certainly in play. My now ancient Onkyo 805 is still going strong, HDMI and all. And I do believe that Jeremy is correct about the newer models.

I suspect my unit was probably "modded" by Onkyo and that the HDMI board components were upgraded since I bought it "refurbed" from Onkyo Direct! Never had a problem with it! Though it still heats up back there!

If the new Oinkers are reliable I'd think it's a no brainer too. I liked the way my Marantz sounded on the Monitor 60s when I had them. A very noticeable upgrade from my old pre-HDMI receiver.
