Today... I feel really old!

Just dusted off my trusty ol' Schwinn Voyageur 11.8 road bike for the first time in 5 years, and it kicked my a$$ for the entire 3 miles I rode it today. I could not balance properly on it, could not reach the shifters, and could not find the right gears to make the ride even remotely comfortable. I have owned this bike for 30 years now and today I felt as if I had never ridden it before.

Damn does it suck getting old.

Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. We "walk" briskly on the treadmill, show our leg strength on the bike, and heave up some "manly" free weights so those young guys realize that you don't lose your strength for quite some time, even if you're a little less flexible and slower, except for hand speed, that is. Have to keep them young ones in order!

The other thing WE don't do is 3 miles on uneven terrain after sitting on a couch for SIX months next to a six pack and the Doritos!

Lightman1 spends all day climbing poles so there you go! lol

Thought of that, but first I have to finish the man-cave. (lol) I may never stand up again after I get that done...

And to my old friend CNH, I walk with the wife an average of two miles per day at night. I figured that I was in ok shape, but I guess different muscles need a bit more work. I live less than 4 miles from my job, so the idea I have going forward, is to ride to work every day as part of my plan to loose 30 pounds and get back in shape. Tennis, and a bunch of push ups are also part of the deal. My goal is to get back to a decent "fighting shape" so if Lightman decides to piss in my shrubs again, I can whup his scrawny a$$ and post it to YouTube.

My understanding of it is that my bike was a Japan-built Paramount with lesser grade components, but it was no slouch back in the day. When I was a much younger due, I could cruise all day long on this one and not even need to stop to catch a breath. 50+ miles a day was a walk in the park. I want to get back to that level of conditioning.

Yeah last year did a family ski trip. Starting preping and conditioning 2 months earlier because I hadn't skied in years. Got up to hard riding about 20mi a couple times a week. The 1st 3 weeks were a pain and almost said to hell with it. By the time of the trip I had worked in other calisthenics in the regiment.

I warned my kids (early 20's) and their boy friends and girl friends to get their crap together and work out but they didn't listen. They are typically active and not over weight, but they got their kicked by day 2 and I laughed.

Anyway moral to the story...good luck and hang in there

    You get discounts at stores
You get caught staring at a nice rack, and they just smile at you.

You have an excuse for stupid statements
You slow down and enjoy life more so
You get to laugh at the younger generations

    Stop whining!

Every day that you are vertical and breathing is a great day after you reach a certain age. A couple of years ago, I came within a single breath of being on the wrong side of the turf, and now I give thanks for every day I still get to enjoy my wife, my family, my John Deere 4400, and my audio gear. I've got maturity on my side -- perhaps, a little too much maturity.

The only benefit of getting old is that you can be a curmudgeon, if you so choose; but that probably have the wisdom to know that you don't get much by taking advantage of that benefit!

Cheers, guys, because getting older each day is far better than the alternative -- usually.

Back in the 80's Schwinn outsourced their Paramount frames, because they didn't have a factory that could do lugged frames.

I still ride my 83 Team Fuji race bike as my main road bike, downtube shifters and all, and I do just fine riding with the carbo/luminum framed hotshots. I will say that it did take a bit longer than I thought it would to ride myself back into shape, and I wasn't sure that my 50+ yr old legs could handle race gearing again, but it all worked out in the end.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

Ah, Fuji memories. I bought a Fuji 12 speed in 78 to rehabilitate my knees after a motorcycle accident. I used to amaze myself with how far I would go on it. Even sold my car and used it as transportation for around 4 months. Of course, any gas money I saved was spent on food since I was always hungry.

I am 61 years young, but my running days are over. I do get "walker's knee" however. I take a few days off when it gets too bad and when I start walking hard again, it's like I am already out of condition.

But, I think back to when my grandfather was in his mid-60's and he, and most of the people of his age, looked and acted a lot older. I think the years of manual labor too more of a toll on people of his era.
