Who sang the original version of the Sheryl Crow hit "The First cut is the deepest." The arguement is Rod Stewart or Brian Adams. I think they both recorded it but who was first?

Rod Stewart did the original. I believe it was back in the 70's. Not sure the exact year.
I know Bryan Adams did a song "Cuts Like A knife", but not sure if he ever did a cover of Rod's song.

Doesn't appear in BA's discography, don't think he ever did it.

It was actually first recorded and released by P.P. Arnold (a former Ikette) on the album The First Lady of Intemediate in 1967. It was also on an album released later that same year by Cat Stevens (who wrote the song) on New Masters. Rod Stewart released it on his 1976 album Night On The Town.
Had Bryan Adams ever recorded the song (which he didn't) it would have been after 1980 which was the date of Bryan's debut album."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Now that I've dug a little deeper, here's the history of the song:
Song: First Cut Is the Deepest
By P. P. Arnold
Music and lyrics by Steven Demetre Georgiou
On album The First Lady of Immediate (1967)
Cat Stevens wrote the song for P. P. Arnold and released the song too a little later.
These are all artists that have covered the song:
The First Cut is the Deepest - Martin Simpson
First Cut Is the Deepest - Keith Hampshire
The First Cut Is the Deepest - Sheryl Crow
The First Cut Is the Deepest - Rod Stewart
The First Cut Is the Deepest - Cat Stevens
The First Cut Is the Deepest - Haddaway
First Cut Is the Deepest - Eddy
The First Cut Is the Deepest - The Countdown Singers
The First Cut Is the Deepest - Bonfire
Seems I jumped the gun. Rod was NOT the originator of the song.
There ya go.
