The only "music" my 1.2TL's can't fix is (C)rap music. Even Lady Gaga(on vinyl) sounds decent.

As I sad, SQ and The Clash isn't something you think of. While they started as a punk band. ( 1st album ) I would say they moved on considerably after that.

I never thought London Calling sounded all THAT horrible.....

I know what you mean, but to me, the Clash was punk as **** from day one to the end. For me, it is less about the music, and more about the demeanor.

SQ was, of course, one of the two "matrix" quad (four channel) formats that enjoyed some popularity in the early 1970s. The other was called QS. Matrix quad eventually evolved into "Dolby ProLogic" surround sound.

As to the Clash... great stuff -- SQ, QS, CD-4, or discrete four channel tape. Heck even stereo or mono or (Heaven forefend) - digital.

Another great Clash box set is the 3 CD box set, Clash on Broadway.

I bought it a few months ago. It is an excellent collection and the SQ is great as well.

Speaking of great sounding albums you'd not necessarily expect to be so, I just got Public Enemy's "It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back" and it sounds AWESOME. The soundstage reminds me of "Amused to Death" in places. Also a very prescient social commentary.

Me not at all.The whole punk progressive thing just passed me by and one could call it a fad since it really didn't have any lasting power. I thought you were going to say The Grateful Dead and now your talking my "only band that matters" w/ a heavy caviot that when they were good they were the best at what they did and a great time was had by all, but if you caught them on an off night horible would be to easy of a description. There was no in between w/ them.

I remember the slogan "The Only Band That Matters". It was as identifiable to the Clash as a slogan as "The Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band In the World" was to the Rolling Stones. Whenever someone mentioned either, you knew exactly who they were referring to.

I was into the Clash bigtime and saw them in concert a couple times too. I used to have about ten different Clash shirts and still have a couple. I bought all their albums on vinyl when the were 1st released (including all the 45 picture sleeves and picture discs) and still have them all in mint condition. I remember the last Clash concert I went to. It was in Philadelphia during the Combat Rock tour. We all wore camouflage with our faces painted camo too. It was freakin' awesome.

It was an exciting time in rock history and I was fortunate to have been a teenager during the 70s. Probably the greatest decade ever when you think about it. The Ramones were a favorite too. We used to go to concerts every week back then and there was no shortage of great bands to go see.

Like the Ramones, the debut album from the Clash was a raw, lo-fi garage sounding record. But they had something that most other bands couldn't capture at the time and that was an energy and originality that broke from the mainstream. That's why some listeners just didn't get it back then. They were either listening to glossed-over pop & new wave tunes masquerading as punk rock or too locked into the classic rock to see what they were missing.

That being said, the pop and classic rock back then was as good as it gets too so there was no shortage of quality music to be into. I was just into everything. I'd go to a Stones concert one week and see the Ramones the following week and then go to a Dead concert the week after that. Pretty-diverse. Blew every cent I had and then some on records, concerts, and "supplies" for the concerts. lol

Unlike the Ramones though, by the time the Clash released their second album they were already rapidly evolving from pure punk to contain elements of Rock, Reggae and Rap/Funk and the fidelity or "sq" on Give 'Em Enough Rope was better. It got even better on London Calling & Sandinista!

The "SQ" on Combat Rock is excellent even by today's standards and was masterfully produced.

But that was it. A brilliant band that lasted only 5-6 years.

One of the more important bands in Rock History.
