Would there be any reason soundwise to go from a GFA 5500 to a B&K ST 1400 series II? They are both MOS FET. For now I am using a Adcom 565 pre amp. I have had the earlier B&K 140s and found them musical but rolled off but then again I now have different speakers.. Thanks

The Adcom is going to be more powerful and dynamic, but the B&K will be warmer and more musical to my ears anyways. It just depends on what you are looking for. If you are finding your current set-up with the Adcom a little bright, the B&K would definitely help. Then again if your speakers are power hungry and hard to drive, you'll be better off with the Adcom. I say try them both and let your ears decide. BTW if you can find a ST-202+ I would just go with that. You'll have the power and slam of the Adcom (I actually think the 202+ has more than the 555/5500 Adcoms) with the warmth of the 1400.

My take is the 5500 does not sound like your typical Adcom. it is MOSFET On the other side of the coin the B&K is a 1400 series II . Does that mean it still sounds like a 140??

I couldn't tell you personally on the 1400s but I've heard the earlier versions of must B&K amps are warmer in tone.

Very different amps. The B&K sound very good, but if your speakers respond to the increase in power, I would go with the Adcom. Both are MOSFET, so should sound more similar than different; when compared to an amp with a different output device.
