Wires?

I've got two questions for you all.
1. What size of speaker wire do I need to run from my amp (JBL BP1200.1) to my sub (mm2104)?
I have some 18AWG laying around and another length of wire that's considerably thicker but I'm not sure of it's size, which leads me to question #2.
2. How can I tell what size a wire is if it's not printed on the insulation?
Here's a picture of the unknown wire that I have (it's the gold wires  )

Ok, forget about my "unknown" wire. It is now known  i really need to look at getting a new contact prescription
The wire is 12gauge. Should that be enough? -
I personally like to use 2/0 gauge. JK:D Twelve gauge is fine.

lol, i always feel that it's better to go larger than you need, i use 12 for my component sets and 8 for my subs...Hemi: (HEM -e) adj. i think the wire to my subs is 12...might be 10...
but if its not a very long run, 12 is great
