Looks like investing in Cary products gives better returns than buying a car

I was planning for a Cary SLP05 from a long time and i just realised the prices went up even further.

now the price for SLP05 is 8995$ and no changes to the model whats so ever.

few months back it was 8500$.... looks like its better to pull trigger before the damn price goes up again.

Does all brands do this? do they hike up the prices with out any updates to the product???

Hope Cary is not getting carried away with their prices

Well I know Manley did this a while back but gave everyone a fair warning. Emotiva is always doing it and many other brands. The cost of manufacturing goes up and parts get more expensive so its the way everything goes. Why would you want to buy new? You can get that model from great high end sellers for way cheaper than the msrp.

    Want specifically black color.
I am new to this tubes stuff so i would rather get full warranty buying new than used one...just in case if something goes bad.
Looks like prices for used ones also went up ...recent used ones with excellent condition are going close to 6k .

For higher end product, supply vs. demand is truer than ever. Magico's top model, the Ultimate, was released at $229,000 and now costs a mere $600,000. Talk about investment potential.

Holy Cow those are some numbers ......... how many did they sell till date 10?

Bryston isn't bad either (nothing on Magico) Picked mine up 9 years ago at dealer cost and it sells used for a hair more than that these days. A good bit of it is driven by the Canadian exchange rate- clearly not the case with Cary, but there a number of external factors that can impact the price.
Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
    Gallo Ref AV, Frankengallo Ref 3, LC60i : Bryston 9b SST : Meridian 565
    Jordan JX92s : MF X-T100 : Xray v8

You can still find them used under 5k. Just curious though, being a first timer in the tube world, why start out with a Top of the line pre amp ? The slp98 at around 2-2500 bucks is a damn fine pre on it's own. You could also pick up a used Joule in that range which would be everything the slp 05 is as far as sound quality goes.

Many tube pre's, if your worried about warranty, will last a lifetime...it's the tubes that you roll and or replace where the extra costs come in. Don't discount the cost of tubes, it can get fairly expensive.

The slp 05 is a great pre and looks gorgeous...but the hefty price isn't warranted in my book when soo many other pre's out there can get you the same if not better SQ for half that. You should start out with a lessor pre from Cary imho, you may not even like the Cary house sound, which all brands pretty much have a house sound that crosses their model lineup. Think about this one....

    Thanks for that reply Tony.

I first thought of gettting SLP 98F1, Joule Electra as suggested by F1nut
Then i wanted to build a system which is completely balanced and something i dont have to update for next 4-5 years.
i also want a pre with HT by pass so i waited for six months to get the best and call it a day.

that 25% off make it cheaper than this ?

    http://www.usaudiomart.com/details/649115057-cary_slp_05_tube_preamplier/

    4300 bucks.

Then I'd use the extra cash for the Cary 100t dac.

    yup i did see that

Paint me picky/choosy but i really wanted a black one and for the difference i will get full warranty and brand new tubes.

Promblem is i am not sure i am cursed or something but most of the time stuff i buy ... generally breaks :-)

i generally get extended warraty on most of my stuff and suprisingly i use them all the time.

New tubes doesn't mean much as most swap them out anyway when getting new gear. Though you would hope Cary includes some darn nice tubes at the price they are asking.

If you have such problems with stuff breaking, there has to be a reason for that and even more so why you should rethink buying a piece of gear that cost as much as a used car.

I sincerely hope whatever you choose works out for you. Tubes aren't for everyone, which is why I'm questioning your choice of a costly example to find out.

That's the reason I had to wait for 6 months before I can think of pulling trigger.

Final two of my list are Parasound Halo JC2 and this slp 05...

Ever since I joined this forum I was itching to buy a Tube pre thanks to F1nut for that ....after swaying between these two I finally stopped again with SLP05

Two days more before I can pull trigger.... If by miracle if I see a used one in black color I will pull the trigger and see how that goes.

Thanks again for all your replies. Appreciate it.

The SONY 400DVD player DVP-CX995 are sold for the msrp price (few years ago) on EBAY??? Nobody make any 400BD-DVD player now. Pre-amp have a catastrophic return, ROTEL RSP-1098 don't find any customers for 1/4 the msrp price (and it's the best value). SHERBOURN sale their new stuff for 1/3 price, the vintage YAMAHA M-series have almost 80% of value than new (M-80, MX-1000)... JBL L serie are super expensive (x-times the msrp)and they are almost 30-35 years old!
